Telika: Also, gotta love how whenever one movie occasionally has a female lead, it's "because of feminism", and trillion movies with their carbon copies action man heroes are just some undescript default.
Long boring post, beware. :P

I saw a great horror/comedy movie a few years ago that pulled off a hilarious bit with this. The movie is basically just about a bunch of people in a bar barricading themselves against vampire attack and every time a new character is introduced it shows a still along with name and odds of survival.

Well the vampires are killing left and right, there is no hope, and all of a sudden this big bag Duke Nukem looking guy charges in. He is announced as "Bad Ass Hero; Odds of Survival: PRETTY DAMN GOOD!". So before he can get a shot off, a vampire hits him from behind and takes his head clean off. XD Immediately that vampire explodes and in walks this girl with a still smoking shotgun. The caption, "Bad Ass' Girlfriend; Odds of Survival: hopefully better than her boyfriend". Needless to say she kills everything undead and saves the day.

Yeah, Feast from 2005.
I grew up in the 80s, and by far my favorite sci-fi movies of that era were

Aliens (plural) - incredible suspense buildup and performances.
Blade Runner - visionary, big ideas.
Star Wars series, of course. The mythology of our times.

A few good movies of that era that are underappreciated imho:

Enemy Mine
The Last Starfighter
Explorers

From a humorous angle:
Spaceballs

Mom and Dad Save the World is from 1992, but it's one of those movies that's so bad it's good, and for some reason it popped into my mind when I think of sci-fi movies of my youth..
