Ok, so, get ready for some vague recollections....

Many, many years ago I played an early RPG on the pc. This was in 1990 and the game was old already by then. It was, as I recall, text-only. In it you had to create and equip a military-esque force with various covert and combat skills. I can't remember much about it because - at the time - I really didn't get what I was meant to be doing. I had *thought* it was called 'Heroes of a Modern Age' but there's no such game that I can find called that so I don't know why I'd remember that as the title. I seem to recall the text was all monochrome, like an old PCjr or C-16 game. I like to think I'd recognise it if I saw it again.

If anyone can help identify this game, I'll part with one of my gift codes for them :)

Cheers!
"", or other fantasy thing like the early "[url=http://www.gog.com/game/ultima_1_2_3]Ultima" or "Wizardy" maybe ?

No, it was definately a modern setting - guns and espionage. Modern for the time, anyway. And it wasn't rogue-like text characters that I remember, more like.... ASCII charts and tables and text options for your actions and their effects.

I don't know if this can be of any help, but here goes:
The guy on this blog has been playing and reviewing every CRPG in chronological order.

Try searching the blog's archives or asking someone there. He may have already played the game you're looking for.

It's a fascinating site - however, I couldn't find anything that looked like I remembered. Mission:Mainframe looked close-ish, in that it's contemporary and text-based, but that's not it.... I'm wondering if it was a DOS title after all.... maybe a PCjr thing?
From the link karnak provided, the closest thing seems to be Space or Space 2, or maybe Expedition Amazon (although it has graphics) or Operation Overkill (although it came out in 1990).
No, sadly, none of those - it was definatley a modern military/espionage feel, and I want to say that it had that genre's skillset - pistols, stealth, knives, etc - but I can't remember specifics.
I didn't have any luck finding it. You could try browsing this list, good luck with your search.

Operation: Overkill II?
Alas, no - it was definately in that style, though, I think - apart from anything resembling graphics. I don't remember any graphics or any colour at all.
It was Deus Ex, admit it. And it wasn't 1990, it was yesterday.

I know, man. I know.

It'll be OK.
Mines of Titan? It's not ascii though but it's a modern setting.
A lot of games out there :) Maybe its one of these:

Spy Snatcher

UMS - Universal Military Simulator

Empire: Wargame of the Century

Red sky at morning

Arnhem

Or maybe one of those :)

PS: Wow I didn't know there were so many great old strategy games. I hope their A.I. can provide some challenge.
