Hi, trying to get X-wing Alliance to run on XP (i know old operating system but I have no plans to upgrade until I get a new machine). Trawled the internet for answers to no avail. I had this game in the CD rom days and I recently tried it with the same issue. It works fine off the disc until I upgraded it to 2.02 patch after which I get this crash.

I bought the GoG version in the hope it might not have the same issue but it's exactly the same. Basically I get a black screen then crash to desktop with the usual windows has encountered an error.

The Dr Watson report on the issue states:

Any ideas from anyone?

Thanks.

Can you update your game and install with the latest installer as mentioned in this post? Also try to use admin rights on the setup.exe and see if it helps you.
http://www.gog.com/forum/star_wars_xwing_and_tie_fighter_series/star_wars_xwing_alliance_installer_update_the_sequel

Also try to look there for any help, you might find your answer quicker. Also what are your specs? Might be hardware related....

It reminds me a bit of trying to read minidumps, you had to load symbol sets to correctly read those as well.
Perhaps the event viewer shows a more understandable error?
I only downloaded it today so should be the latest version. Also I am the Admin so no issues there.

I think this is a legacy issue with the 2.02 version, as I say before GoG even had the game I was getting this issue with the latest patch on the old CD rom version.

Sys specs:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs)
Memory: 3070MB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 630 with 2 gig on it.

Cheers.
Hi there, GOG clearly states in the product page that "Works on: Windows (XP, Vista, 7, 8)" so it could be an issue of some driver probably, what version is your NVIDIA driver (the lates have some issues with older games - see here)? Also this "Unable to verify checksum for C:\Program Files\LucasArts\XWingAlliance\XWingAlliance.exe" is very strange, did the GOG installer reported you something during install, does the .exe file downloaded completely (you can try the GOG downloader in that case). Other possible reason could be that your anti-virus is blocking the .exe of the game and also Dr. Watson from properly calucating the checksum.

I guess not.
It was a long shot anyway. I did some Googling and all I found was some kind of XWA Upgrade project which actually mentioned the GOG version borking the mod on the frontpage.
I hope you find a solution, I don't have XP or XWA so I can't really help you I'm afraid.

If you really don't find any solution on the game's specific forum either, then I suggest you contact the support team. They will help you. (there is also a refund policy within 30 days...)

Yes I think the return policy could be enacted if: 1) the game doesn't run on your system and 2) the support can't fix the problem for you within those 30 days.
