I ran the "Config" file that allows you to set graphics and controller settings and I enabled "32-bit Color". However, when I run the game, I get constant freezes and black screens. The game is basically unplayable. Can anyone tell me the reason why enabling "32-bit Color" causes this issue?

if on windows, could you try compatibility mode and/or set color bits from there also?

I'm on windows. Which compatibility mode do you want me to run and on which executable? The config application or the game application?
In the game's page on PCGamingWiki it says that the game runs on DirectX 8 which has performance issues with Windows 10 and 11. On that page there are a couple of solutions, one of them is using a wrapper called 'd3d8-wrapper'. I hope it might work for you.

^That

And as an alternative you can always try good old dgVoodoo2.

A game from 2016 using DirectX8 ... now I've heared everything. Who does that? DX9 was already a thing in 1997
If you don't have a legacy OS of some kind, I would go with a wrapper as already suggested. Great game btw, one of those hidden gems people don't mention much.

Oh boy... let's try to get things straight:

A traditional Japanese game released in 2005 using DX8, since they chose to go with an already established and documented mature version instead of waiting for beta DX9 sdk (which was hardly a thing in '97 btw as the release version of it trickled down slowly since 2002 and was only introduced en masse to households running win xp sp2 in 2004).

I think that's the year of the international release, the actual game (as noted by Spectrum_Legacy) is much older.

Makes sense
FYI, while supporting the game is still on the "todo" list as of now (it's currently missing some textures in game), when that's fixed you will be able run the game with Vulkan by using d8vk. Plenty of other d3d8/dx8 games are already supported and working fine even on Windows.

DX8 came out late in the year 2000, so not sure what you are on about :P.

Out of curiosity, I started the game.

First time simply by clicking the ".exe" on my desktop - everything runs flawless (though, per default, in a smaller resolution than I prefer).

Second time via the "config"-file and resolution manually set to "1920 x 1080 x 32" (my monitor's native resolution) - everything runs flawless.

Third time, via the "config"-file again, but this time I chose the "General Preset: Highest", which checks the box besides "32-bit-color" automatically - and again: everything runs flawless.

Win10, btw.

I have a feeling OP is on an Intel iGPU where things might be a bit more hectic due to driver support.

In any case, your screenshot made me remember the "funny" frame-rate options the game has. "Rough" limits the game to 15 fps! Why was that even ever a thing?

Ooh, 15 fps sound fun. shudder

I can only assume: to make it run on the proverbial potato?

Fewer frames results in a more cinematic experience.

A screenshot is the most cinematic of all.

I am on Windows 8 using a geforce GT 635 video card.

In that case, I think trying out dgVoodoo2 with the game, or the above linked wrapper, is the best approach.
