most probably because of rights.
They haven't sued that Warcraft combat edition.
A lot of WoW bashing going on in here. WoW is not a bad game, and is their main cashcow, so of course they support it the most.

They've also refined it heavily in the 13 years it's been out. When they release Classic WoW and people get to play vanilla again, there's going to be a ton of people who think vanilla was so good, and then realize it wasn't.

There's a lot of conveniences in online gaming that became popular through WoW. I'm certainly not a Blizzard fanboy, and I'm not even saying they created half of what became mainstream through their most popular game, but give them credit where credit is due - they've made certain systems and conveniences commonplace in online, and a lesser extent, single player games.
I know Blizzard gets a lot of hate but I think they're right in not bothering to remaster WC1 and 2. Even if the controls were improved, the fundamental game still shows its age.

WC1 Warlocks and conjurors were incredibly unbalanced. Demons and water elementals could take and dish out a ton of damage and when their timer ran out, the caster had full mana again to spawn a new one and continue their rampage. It was possible to just sit in your base with 4 warlocks/conjurors and win.

Each side in WC1 was also identical. I think the only differences were archers had slighter better range then spearmen, necrolyte and clerics had different spells (they both had the viewing spell) and the demon was slightly stronger than the water elemental but the water elemental was ranged, the orc wolf pen was smaller than the human stables.

WC2 wasn't much better. What were the differences? archers had higher damage, trolls had regeneration, caster units had different spells (more variety than WC1) and I think that's it.

There's nothing wrong having a nostalgia trip with WC1 and 2 but it's probably better it stays there. I have no problem saying I loved WC1 and 2 when I was younger but I can't deny that they haven't aged very well. I'm also not stupid enough to think other people would or should be interested in playing WC1 and 2 based on my own nostalgia.
Because it's more comfortable than sitting directly on the throne of pure gold?

But that wasn't the original request here. It was about making it legally and digitally available for everybody. Despite its faults, I'd rather play the original WC1 than most current AAA games (including any online games, like WoW).

So it's stupidity to let others choose? Your errata logic is like; because me --> then also others. You're actually arguing that it should stay buried for others also as nostalgia because you don't see a modern use of it, right?

I've zero nostalgia when it comes to WC1, Ultima or many other games, but I would never assume that people would not because of my experience (or lack of).

The best example of this is one writer here in Norway in the middle of the 90s; He wrote a big article on how non-useful the internet was (internet is a flopp!), and he personally couldn't see any use of it. He concluded that the internet was just a "phase" or a short trend. Basically concluded that no other would see any use either.

He did the same mistake a couple years later when the internet really grew exponentially. He grossly underestimated humans perverse need to curiously explore, collaborate and share knowledge.

Several has actually been surprised that people has shown an interested in their project when they released it into the wild, even if it was old and they themselves didn't think anyone would care or be interested.
It's because they are stupid and don't know the money they can make re releasing it to the public with modern resolution and hardware support. Well at least they did starcraft and moving to warcraft 3 and diablo 2

That's indeed what I was aiming for (not that remastered versions of both would entice me greatly) bringing these games to everybody, including those who indeed think WoW is where WarCraft started (even though the lore is clearly continuation of something earlier). And a pre-established config with DosBox is ever greater.

Isn't that yet another reason to tweak and remaster gameplay?
Fuck, I think I'll have to grab Warcraft II from some abandonware site after this thread as soon as I have time to really play it. I mean, if Blizzard is outright admitting they are not going to release it in any way, shape or form and don't care about it, then there's little reason to feel bad about using such sites. A doesn't get much more "abandoned" then this :P

Sadly, I've no idea what's happened to mine. Most of my games from those days are missing in action. Dune, High Seas Traders... great stuff. Still, getting the abandonware copy to work is probably going to be easier anyway.

Problem with those versions are that typically things like the video clips end up being gutted. Best to try and find a cd version somewhere, be it physical or an iso image.

Luckily its one of the more insanely popular classics so there should be no shortage of guides to get it working on a modern system.
