Risk of Rain!!! :D It's a great game 2-D roguelike side scroller action game. It's one of my favorites and I played it with my cousins when they came to visit. Works really great splitscreen, especially if you have a controller you can plug in to your computer! It's easy to learn and doesn't require any investement. It's drop in and play as each run is randomized! Plus it's really fun to play solo too! :P

Guacamelee! (both editions, I believe)
Crimzon Clover (possibly also Caladrius Blaze)
Shovel Knight (given a recent enough version; the game didn't originally have this feature)
Tyrian 2000 (though I don't know how easy/hard it is to set up)

You might want to see if any of these games interest you. In any case, the last game on this list shouldn't be too expensive, so you should be able to afford it.
I second Tyrian 2000, it's awesome and is completely FREE.
