What's with the sudden addition of [Forum game] to a load of existing topics?

They all seem to be forum games so I'm not disputing the accuracy - just wondering what motivated this? Is anyone really going to look at the topic "Word Association Game" and get upset that it's not about a PC game called Word Association?

Have the blues commented on this anywhere?

Their solution of marking forum games without having to modify the forum software. I quite like it. Their number has slowly become overwhelming and there have been some complaints about it. This lets people who aren't interested in them quickly skip over them.

I've also seen a thread marked [Giveaway], so there might be more possible categories.

7/50 on page one of the forums is overwhelming? I've seen the complaints, but they seem to be a vocal minority who hate that there are any forum games at all.

Hopefully a blue has commented on this somewhere because I'd be interested to know if they're requiring new threads have these tags from the beginning or if the admins are just going to keep adding them as they see them.

As Post 2 says, this allows people to both find those threads more easily(especially if they're newcomers) to read/join in them, and helps those not interested in them avoid/filter them more easily.

No, but I think the idea is a good one so I have been helping out by pointing out threads they missed to a staffer I am usually in contact with.

As I said, they seem to only add the tags to ones they find or that others report to them....it doesn't seem to be a requirement.

That user actually marked their own thread that way, from what i've heard.

Addition: also some users like the OP of this thread also seem to be going along with the 'trend' as well

I like it, personally. I have a couple of them favorited so having that tag helps separate them from other types of threads so that I can quickly know what's receiving replies.

It's only for the convenience and visibility, nothing more, nothing less :)
This way, if someone is not interested in checking threads that are tagged, they can skip it after a short glance.

Makes me very happy that you like the idea!

PS. I tagged those threads that I've found so it's possible that there are still some active ones that are not tagged. Feel free to send me a link in such cases.
I was just thinking the other day that these boards are cluttered with these "games" and the interesting topics are more and more rare.

pls make them hideable
they always make the half of the first page... and for most of us they just meaningless spams

I would agree. Had noticed it before, but I count at least 12 threads of this type on the first page, which is most of the first page.

This is also something I have noticed. I suspect most of the client base from before galaxy have gone now, nobody interested in drm free offline installers or websites anymore. It’s all client and linked up social media.

There were 7 out of 50 when I made this topic yesterday. Even 12 isn't a lot. :P

As for the implication that it's the new users playing forum games... well GOG's mafia community has been going since 2011. And a few of the other game threads are fairly ancient. Let's not blame everything you don't like on "the new guys".

That makes sense, I just wondered if it was part of some kind of rule change.

There were nearer 12-13 a couple of moments ago (the attached pic excludes 2x more below it). I don't dislike them and I don't think they should be removed, but when that many get clustered together and constantly get "bumped" up to the top of page 1, on top of another 8 or so "sticky" posts, it eats up almost half the front page even with a setting of 50 per page, and the issue there is those of us who only check the forum a couple of times per day can end up missing new News game release topics due to them getting pushed off Page 1 twice as quickly. If the number grows any more then I definitely support setting up a Forum Game sub-forum. People who use those threads are highly likely to mark them as favourite anyway so they'll still continue to appear under the "Favourite topics and received replies" above even the Sticky General Forum topics anyway.

are all forum games that haven't had the "Forum Game" tag applied yet, just on page 1-2. So that's 6x more to add.

I can't say I like the idea of a subforum. Favourited topics only shows favourites for the subforum you're currently in and received replies hasn't been working properly for a while (and only works if someone directly replies to you, rather than just when the thread is bumped).
Hiding the games in a subforum would be a death sentence for them, I'm certain of it.

Don't most regulars just keep topics that they regularly post in open as additional browser tabs or bookmarks? I do that with several topics in game-specific sub-forums without needing to manually search for them each time.

I just keep one pinned GOG forums tab, I use GOG's own favourites to keep track of the topics I want to remember. But that's not what I meant - putting the games in a subforum would kill them because there would be no new blood. They need the "foot traffic" of General Discussion for new people to find them. I'd bet most people posting in those threads didn't go looking for a forum game, but when they happened to see it they gave it a look.

What GOG really needs is a counterpart to the favourites, a way for the individual user to hide topics they are personally not interested in. These then wouldn't count towards the total topics on a page and so a person who'd hidden those 13 game threads would see the top 63 (without the 13 games).

This is all pointless dreaming though... There's no way GOG will start adding features to this forum when they won't even do maintenance on it.

a subforum would be a perfect place for these "games"

if everybody stops "playing" them when they can't get to the top of the main page means they are just spam threads
