Hello

I don't play play much and I am still fond of the old game I played in college Clive Barker's Undying, so I am wondering what game I could play now that would be similar to, or dare I hope, remotely related to Undying ?

I heard of Jericho which was marketed as the continuation for Undying, but, without playing it, it looks it is just marketing, it is not like Undying. I guess there are several "horror" games out there like Silent Hill, but they are just missing proper lighting and calling it a feature. I guess I am asking is there a game with nice and colorfull outdoors and hills, an still have an intreguing story and monsters to shoot ?

Thank you,
Timothy Madden

Pathologic?
Reborn
Of all the things going on in Undying you remember it for its "nice and colorful outdoors and hills with monsters" ? Also you call Silent Hill games "horror" with quotes, and say they only have "missing light" going for them?

Like, WTF !?

I suggest you go play Serious Sam 2 then, with its sunbathed green hills and blue skies with monster, it will make you shit your pants in horror.

Is that even possible?
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth has a similar feel to it imo and has a great atmosphere, definately worth playing imo and hopefully without many technical issues, it doesn't have much in the way of colors but it's dark tone really fits the game.

Clive Barkers Undying is a lot of fun but jericho is crap, Also i'm not sure if you want a colorful game or a decent one judging from your post.

Realms of the Haunting.

It's not exactly colourful (because it's, you know, spooky), but it does have interesting and varied world designs. A few reviews of Undying call it a spiritual successor to RotH, and IMO Realms is the better game overall.
If you want color and horror, then no, Undying was one of a kind. Welcome to my life haha.

But seriously, the thing I remember the most of that game is the awesome battle with the necromancer, the demons, the haunted mansion, and yes, hills... But you made it sound like it was "The Sound of Music" videogame edition with monsters hahahaha

My recommendations would be Oxenfree (it doesn't have battles but it has a similar colorful ghost story kind of vibe, and is sidescroller). Lot's of "teen talk" though, be aware if that's not your cup of tea.

Now, first person shooters? Can't think of ANYTHING close to Undying. Maaaaaybe Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth, but that game has a lot of technical issues (I didn't have any except for two which one was fixed with a newer video driver and the other was at the end just jumping frantically while running, but some people swear is abismal in the polish department). It doesn't have much color, or special powers, or hills... but it does horror right. You start investigating a cult house and eventually go over to Innsmouth, a fishing town where shit hits the fan. LOVED IT.

Also, SOMA is amazing. But you don't have weapons. Made by the developers of Amnesia - The Dark Decent, but the story is actually amazing this time, but still, you look for pieces of diaries in the bottom of the ocean, hide from "murderous machines" etc...

PS: You did right avoiding Jericho. That game is crap. You can't even JUMP. Instead you switch from character to character because hey, managin a team of 6 psychopaths with powers is great in a First Person Shooter... Also, too much action renders the horror into just a gore fest. Basically: beggar's Doom.

Alice: Madness Returns for colorful environments and horror
Amnesia is atmospheric and spooky.

This made reading the entire thread absolutely worth it. I cannot thank you enough for it. :)

It's hard to find action-horror games these days because most people seem to want either horror (often defenseless, post-Amnesia) or action and not really a mix, unfortunately. You could look into something like DUSK on Steam or wait for it to arrive here, but it's mostly action I think (though self-described as having "horror themes" iirc)

Some possibilities might be below, though you should check them out online (they're not particularly colorful I don't think):

Nosferatu: Wrath of Malachi
The Suffering 1 and 2
Blood 1 and 2
Painkiller
NecroVision
Alan Wake
BloodRayne
Killing Time
Dead Space
FEAR
Doom 3 BFG,
You could play Bioshock, it's not outdoors but most levels are fairly well lit and I've always thought of it as a more visually rich shooter.

If you love blends of mostly brown, NecroVision checks that box.

As much as I love F.E.A.R, it's mostly cold and sterile colors - lots of blues and greys - with uses of brighter and warmer colors restricted to amplify its horror themes. It's actually quite fascinating at how well it utilizes color through its storytelling process but it's still far removed from a big technicolor feast for the eyes.
The Suffering 1 & 2.

More action than horror, but my days is it a lovely time to have.
