I just bought and activated this (see screenshot) and it has an expire date of march 11, 2016. Does this mean I can no longer download the game after this date or that it de-activates or what?
Attachments:
It means the key expires, so if you haven't redeemed it before that date, you won't be able to anymore.

If you already redeemed it, it no longer applies.

I thought bought keys didn't have an expiry date, only the freebie giveaways. Now I need to check my gift keys...

The key in the screenshot doesn't look like it was bought on this site since it says "Claim the free item", so I'm guessing it was bundled with a graphics card or something.

Keys bought on this site do not expire.

They don't. If you look closely he/she redeemed a freebie, probably the DLC, therefore expiration date.
But as long as I use it they key is good to go and the game doesn't expire? I can still download the game AFTER the date as long as I have redeemed the key?

Yes. The expiry is only for redeeming the key.
thank you so much for the quick replies!

There are 2 kind of keys GOG uses.
1) Gift codes, which are purchased, can be partially redeeemed, and do not expire. They are 20 character hexadecimal ones.
2) Bonus codes, which are created by the staff, usually for promotion or developers, cannot be partially redeemed, and do expire. They are 10 (I think) character hexadecimal ones.

If you buy a code from another reseller, it should be a Bonus code. If it is a gift code, it's an individual selling it. Bonus codes can be either from developers or from individuals.

Edit: As ZFR pointed out, the gift codes are 20 character hexadecimal ones, not 25 alphanumerical.

Sorry to nitpick, but it's actually 20, and hexadecimal rather than alphanumerical (exluding 0).

No worries, and you are indeed correct. Let me amend my post.

Yeah, that was my understanding of the matter, but in a brief moment of doubt, I got concerned that that too was something GOG decided needs changing. Thanks for reassuring me!

Then again, common hexadecimal notation is alphanumeric when seen from a base-10 perspective (as I'd guess most people do). Of course, this entire post is just a base-128 number, and contains no letters whatsoever.

It means that if you bought it from one of those suspiciously cheap online key retailers, it's probably stolen.

On the contrary, it may very well be legit. As said before, keys that expire are keys generated by GOG staff, not bought by customers. Who gets said keys and what they do with them is a different story though.
