New features, local currency option, new payment methods, store credit, and an updated look for GOG.com!

For almost six years now we strive to bring you not only the best in DRM-Free gaming, but also to give you the greatest experience possible. To that end we're always looking for ways to improve our site and service. Today, we're rolling out a vastly updated version of our store with an improved interface, sleek new look, and lots of handy new features. Let's take a quick tour, shall we?

Video: Welcome to the fresher, better GOG.com!

First of all we are giving you more DRM-free content: movies! We are starting with 20 documentaries about internet and gaming culture but we aim high! You can find more on this in the appropriate newspost, so let's focus on the other features we're rolling out.

We wanted to give you more choice as to how you pay for things on GOG.com. Now it's up to you if you want to pay in US Dollars, or in the currency primarily used in your country, whether it's the Euro, Pounds Sterling, Australian Dollars, or Russian Roubles. That's four new currencies supported by GOG.com for your convenience. Still - the choice is yours, so if you want to stick to US dollars, just switch to it - you find this option at the bottom of each page. To make buying things at GOG.com an even more flexible process, we're introducing some new payment methods: Sofort, Giropay, Webmoney, and Yandex.

All this also means that users for whom the local currency pricing has been enabled will have an option to select one of two different prices for each game in our catalog. Of course, we stand by the simple truth that $1 does not equal 1€, so a game with a $5.99 price tag will cost 4.49 Euro, 3.69 British Pounds, 6.49 Australian Dollars, and 219 Roubles respectively. $9.99 translates to 7.49 Euro, 5.99 Pounds Sterling, 10.89 Australian Dollars, and 359 Roubles. In a perfect world we would apply the same method of pricing to all of the games we offer. However, things are a little bit more complicated, and there are some games in our catalog that follow a different region-based pricing scheme. However, we wouldn't be GOG.com if we didn't find a way to make right by the users who end up paying relatively more for such titles. Here's where the Fair Price Package comes in!

The Fair Price Package applies to all of the titles which we couldn't include in our standard pricing scheme. If you end up paying more for a game than its standard US Dollar price, we'll refund you the difference out of our own pocket. The refunded value will be added to your account in Store Credit in the currency of your purchase. That's right, no more gift codes, you'll be getting Store Credit that you can use to purchase anything on GOG.com or partially pay for an item that's more expensive. More choice, ease of use, and less limitations!

Finally, the GOG.com store has gotten itself a substantial visual revamp. We went for a fresh, mobile-friendly design that should make it even easier to find the games you want, notice the hot promos, and see what's new. The main page, catalog view, product pages, and checkout have been updated and also lay the groundwork for even more overhaul, coming within the next few months together with many of the GOG Galaxy features. We hope you like it!

PS. Unfortunately, we need to drop some titles from our classic catalog. In such cases, we always do our best to give you an advance warning and a last chance to purchase such games - preferably with a considerable discount. Check this news post to find out which titles are being removed from our catalog, when will it happen, and what parting discounts for them do we currently offer.

Matruchus: Where can I do that?

JudasIscariot: Look up and see where the words "Community Discussions" are :) You'll see a Color Scheme selector to the right of them :)
Thanks for the help but already found it :)

Also I mentioned before that the links at the bottom of the page are going crazy half of the time.

modkon: Really? I mean, I didn't frequent the forums, but weren't it dark grey boxes before?! If I'm mistaken then my bad, just had the impression...
avatar
Matruchus: No, you are right the colour of the forum was darker. This light grey stuff is just nasty. Or is it just the edges of the posts missing?
Oh, were you on the dark color scheme before, and the update changed your setting to the light one? Then I understand why you think it looks different. I've always hated the light color scheme. You need sunglasses to use it.
The old design was perfect for my mobile, but now the front page is a pain in the arse to open on my phone. The forums are fine though.

Other than that, hopefully these issues with Nordic can be sorted out. I suppose not EVERY game from that publisher is being pulled?

Bring back the box art in the top left corner of the game card. Bring the general aesthetics of the site back in line with a real website, not a phone app. That would be a start.

No I was on the grey colour all the time but the colour is now a lot more light grey then before or it is perhaps that now the whole bloody page is grey and im getting a head ache from looking at it or its something with the browsers since as some said there are differents between website rendering in differetn browsers.

From what I have seen of the new layout, I like it so far. I will update this if I see anything that I think is an issue. Good job.

G-Doc: We know that some things aren't yet working 100% as they should, but we'll continue to work on putting the site in better shape than it ever was.

Wishbone: You mean you actually planned to have a bit of color around, and all the soulless corporate grey is a bug? Fantastic news :-D

On a serious note, bugs, as in technical difficulties, are only to be expected with a large update like this. I'm quite confident you'll get them ironed out eventually. But please do listen to what people are saying about the new design as well. Don't assume that just because it isn't a technical problem it isn't important.

G-Doc: Thanks for all your feedback! If you find anything that needs our attention and post it here, you can consider it reported, and you don't need to trouble yourself with sending us a support ticket.

On behalf of the GOG.com team, thank you for all the kind words and constructive criticism!
Thanks for letting us know that you guys are taking the feedback in this thread seriously. The new look is alright overall but certainly some changes are rather morose like the logo for example, are you guys mourning the loss of the 35 games that are going to be removed soon? Please use the original logo color palette so we know its ok to still have fun here. ;)

Also the notifications certainly have to be red like they used to be as good UI design practice dictates that things requiring attention should be clearly highlighted. Similar problem with owned games there doesn't appear to be much difference between black and the dark grey text that is supposed to indicate a game already in our library, please make it more prominent. I am sure there is a lot more that needs tweaking that I will let you guys know once I have spent some more time with this new interface but overall its a positive change in my opinion. :)
Where did the colors go?
avatar
denizsi: I don't like the almost-monochromatic interface at all. It somehow feels very aggressive and hostile, as if I'm about to gonna get screwed over by GOG.
Exactly. It's like it's designed like so many others to intentionally hide the goods. Movies are great but I never ever ever asked GOG to sell movies. I have lots of marketplaces for those, so to come here and get spammed about movies is disturbing. Next up, vacation packages only to Poland.

G-Doc: Ummm... I'm pretty sure we haven't done anything with the forums layout. Try switching to a darker theme on the top of the forum page, maybe?
No, I have the dark theme. As I said, it's a mistake on my end then.

But still one thing: loading of the site and game pages seems slower than before, GOG was usually the fastest of all the sites to buy digital games from. But maybe the server's overrun right now.
avatar
ShadowWulfe: I suppose not EVERY game from that publisher is being pulled?
The only games that are not pulled are The Book of Unwritten Tales 1+2 and The Raven: Legacy of a Master Thief, both of them now sporting regional price.
I'm not experiencing any bugs on Firefox, but the new color scheme is so uniform that it actually hurts my eyes when I browse games. Old theme was smartly color coded and would draw your attention to all the pertinent information at a glance.

Is there any possibility that GOG.com might follow the example of sites like IGN, where they've introduced separate sites for smart phones and desktop computers? If that's not an option, please add more colors for better recognition. Options for smaller icons would also reduce clutter on the front page considerably. Whoever thought that having one additional click for viewing game descriptions is a good idea should really leave design decisions to someone else.

Grargar:
Huh, so did Nordic want a greedier regional price than some of the other publishers on here? As far as I know there are quite a few games that have been regionally priced besides those.
I can't say that i like the new look better, quite the opposite.

Sorry, but this is a disapointing design.

New release are now mixed with future releases.

Thanks for nothing.

I guess sooner or latet i won't come by on a daily basis anymore, as this side turns more and more into something i neither need nor like:

no more GOOD OLD games, strange decisions ("movies", who came up with this brilliant idea?), rather worse design than before. Sigh.

:(
