Mr.Mumbles: Interesting discount percentage
I'm sure it's not conincidence. The same discount has appeared on GOG many times as well as on Steam, Humble and other stores.
low rated

MeowCanuck: Exactly. I'd be eaten alive if I did the same thing to a common genre Orkhepaj enjoys by oversimplifying everything in a vacuum. Let people enjoy whatever they like as long as no one is being hurt.
Give it a try, let's see how does it fare :P
To people curious about VN out there, you should give a try to Pyre.
(not part of the sale, but worth the asked base price anyway)

It’s an hybrid game that is roughly half-VN half-something-else, so it can be a great introduction to the genre. I loved it despite not usually liking the genres it’s based on (VN and sports).

MeowCanuck: I've already explained to them the novelty of VNs over its other equivalent media, but they intentionally choose to be ignorant anyway.
Frankly, I believe that "they ain't games" is just another pretext for some people to attack Japanese works — especially considering how passionately they tend to be doing it.

Crisco1492: Because some people refuse to accept VNs as games, and are very vocal in their disapproval. And to be honest, I wonder how much of it is "we don't get choices" and how much of it is "I hate weeb shit" (Telltale Games and Quantic Dreams don't seem to draw as much hate).
Bingo.

(Noticed your post after I've finished writing mine.)

Risingson: Hey, I am not a diehard fan either but let people enjoy things.

EDIT: though I agree that there is a huge need of critical analysis in this subgenre. The fans think that each and every one of them is a masterpiece and their analysis consists of enumeration. In any case, Murder by Numbers is fun and does not have a lot of text.

MeowCanuck: I don't believe this is true. If you take a look at any of the games on vndb.org, most of the ratings are quite reasonable and accurate when looking at the data spread and sample size. I'm sure it looks that way to you because some hardcore fans are very vocal about those nukige subgenre games (e.g., RPGMaker engines, Miel, Black Lilith, etc.) with < 2 hrs gameplay and all that hentai and extreme fetish content appealing to their wildest fantasies. Or maybe those reviews on Steam that were designed to be funny gives a misleading perception of how the game is received by the entire base.

However, there are some of us who actually enjoy non-sexual VNs and/or those with unique gameplay too.

Immersive stories include Umineko, Steins;Gate, Fata Morgana, Clannad, G-senjou no Maou (all-ages), etc.

Gameplay examples include Ace Attorney series, Master Magistrate, Eiyuu Senki (all-ages), Baldr Sky (all-ages), Danganronpa series, Utawarerumono series, Kamidori Alchemy Meister, Sunrider series, Vallhalla Cyberpunk Bartender Action, Coffee Talk, etc.
Hey, you realised that you answered this to a comment of mine where I say that the critical analysis of the VM fans consists mainly of enumeration, right? :D

Really, if you say "immersive stories" it does not say anything to me. What I like about the Ace Attorney games is, in the first trilogy, how concise they are, how non filler is the text, which is a novelty for a VM. That and those moments where something completely absurd and out of the blue happens, like the plot twists in Justice for All, which is my favourite of the saga. I actually think that Great Ace Attorney and Miles Edgeworth 2 are very, very bloated in text. And for a detective genre, which traditionally consists of super short sentences and barely any exposition, I don't like it. Raymond Chandler, not Proust.

I wish VN were better written and the characters did not talk like they do, in meandering sentences with loads of "...". Or I wish there was a VN that did not follow these tropes.

I remember it as really well-written, and not following the common tropes.

So, anything recommendable?

KasperHviid: So, anything recommendable?
Murder by Numbers is pretty fun with its quirky detective story infused with plenty of Picross-type puzzles, and, well, you know, it's actually a game! ;)

Bog-standard visual novels just don't do anything for me. There just has to be more there than just clicking for the next textbox to appear.

Higurashi series for the story, other than that most of them are boring. GOG visual novel collection is the weakest. If you want a visual novel that change everything there's two actually, but I can only recommend one because the other is mature 18+ game. I recommend Tokimeki Memorial 1 and 2. They actually make the game interesting because you must balance your relationship with actually making good grades and graduated well.

If you want to know the OTHER recommendation, just ask me.

Orkhepaj: the only use for vn-s i can think of if you want to torture some poor fellas as they are cheaper and reusable than water
torture me, baby! I'm all yours!

Yeah, had my eyes on that one for a while!

I like the static click-through of visual novels, but it took a while to get used to the format. A few I liked, which got a few choices, but no "gameplay":
The Testimony of Trixie Glimmer Smith
Arcade Spirits
Highway Blossoms

Okay then.

Sengoku Rance. It mixed visual novel with turn based war strategy game where you defeat enemy generals and "recruit" them in your army. It was amazing as both war game AND adult visual game. Very recommended.

There's also the secret option that is Katawa Shoujo. this game doesn't have complicated gameplay, but the what it's offer is that you're dating girls with disability and before you say anything, it's not fetish stuff, the stories are actually romantic and touching. That's why it has a cult following.
Why Monster Prom 2: Monster Camp isn't part of the sale ?
