DEFCON is all about dropping bombs.
ICBM may qualify?
Well, an early 90's favorite of mine was https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ancient_Art_of_War_in_the_Skies
]"The Ancient Art Of War In The Skies"[/url] which takes place during WWI. It was part of a series, and was considered a mediocre game when released. But I loved the beer-and-pretzels aspect to it's 2D arcadyness. It also came with a built in map editor. A guilty pleasure to be sure!
Do you count futuristic jets and/or mortars?

Because this has both.
I've had much fun with the 2006 game "Wings of Honour - Battles of the Red Baron" which not only has you fight enemy planes but also bomb their bases and sometimes a supply train on certain missions above the trenches in WWI.
I remember a game that I used to play as a teenager on my first real PC that was a demo on one of those DEMO CDs with hundreds of games.

You were a pilot in World War I and each mission you had to complete a set of objectives. I think the game was a demo, but what a demo it was! Some missions you were to destroy enemy planes (many times 1 vs 5+ planes, so you can imagine the tension), some missions you had to destroy enemy ships with bombs, some you had to destroy buildings (most likely enemy factories and plants), in some you had to defend cities from attacks from air with enemy planes and on soil from tanks and vehicles.

Wish I could remember the name of that game.

It had an interesting HUD, with your pilot being shown at the upper left side of the screen if I remember correctly, and your "life gauge" was the pilot's face. If you had good health, the hud would show the pilot's face well and fearless. If you were at around 50% health, his face would be worried and angry. Around 25% his face would be with blood coming out of his mouth and nose and an rage expression. At 0% (therefore, dead, plane destroied) his face would be a only a dead skull with open mouth.

The gameplay was really simple and fun. Surprise today that it came in a demo cd. This game could be easily sold as an indie title today I'd say.

Sounds like some Doom mod.

Hahaha, yes.
Interestingly, I've found the game spending a bit of time on Internet Archive.

Here it is:

I don't remember it being in Czech when I played it back then though. huh... Maybe they translated it to English for the Demo CD? I don't know.

Anyway, Im impressed by how many memories this site can have. :)

Apparently there was an English version, called "Air Guard".
Maybe that was the version you played.
