HijacK: I like the Mass Effect series.
I absolutely and without any doubt have clearly no idea what game you are talking about

JMich: February 2016 is the date so far. XCOM2 is a SciFi game, and if it's as good as XCOM, it should be more than decent.
avatar
Mr. D™: XCOM was ok but compared to the original the controls and content was that much downgraded for consoles. And they had split the game into two halfs and sold the second half as an addon. So I`m not excited for XCOM2.
avatar
swatkat: Cyberpunk 2077 ? ;)
avatar
Mr. D™: 2019 maybe 2020. But yeah I am really hoping this title will be worth buying
Well XCOM 2 is PC only so maybe it will be more to your liking.
avatar
Mr. D™: Yes. Oh I remember reading a walkthrough about 20 years ago, and the story was so compelling, reading this walkthrough was pretty exciting for me although we had no PC and I never got my hands on Star Control 2. Thank you very much for the tip.
Oh, do play it, please. Just remember to keep pen and paper handy while you play. It is a game where taking notes along the way could come in handy. Ah, and if you are not using a walkthrough (and don't remember everything from the one you read 20 years ago), be aware that you might need to play through the game a couple of times before actually completing it. The story (and thus the game itself) is on a timer. If you don't complete the game within the allotted time, you will die, and will probably have to start over. There are things you can do along the way to extend the time limit, but you might not complete the game on your first try. At any rate, save often ;-)

Mr. D™: But in the last time more and more games are released that are basically a multiplayermode sold for 50 or 60 bucks like Destiny and Titanfall, or some kind of platform to sell overprized DLC like Dead Space 3 or Evolve or worse.

The companies claim that attaching a single player campaign is not worth it, because most gamers won`t play it anyways. IMHO that`s bullshit and just a form of justification to significantly cut down content and production time and costs.
But I will not buy Titanfall, Evolve or the new Elite. Fuck those companies. Fuck their business model. And fuck their C.E.O.`s
I know exactly how you feel. I'm rewatching Star Trek Voyager right now, and I've been watching a lot of old(ish) Sci-Fi movies lately, which really got me in the mood to play something sci-fi. That's why I asked about the Star Wars games promo in another thread today- I'd love to play the whole Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series in order, and maybe grab some others too, like Rogue Squadron or Empire at War. And I hope to see more Star Trek games on GOG soon, like A Final Unity. But that's the old stuff, and great though it is, something new would be good.

Unfortunately space sci-fi is not doing very well right now. There used to be so many tv series in that genre, now there is nothing. Barely any movies (I guess the new Star Wars may change that, if it's worth anything), and in games such settings are outnumbered by classic fantasy a hundred to one. I'm keeping my eye on Starcrawlers, maybe that will scratch the itch.

Mr. D™: Listened to (...) Perry Rhodan on tape
Which Perry Rhodan series did you listen to, if I may ask. :)

Have you heard of "Limit Theory"? Limit Theory is a hopefully upcoming game that imo has a huge amount of potential.
Unfortunately, I am not so sure if the game will come out at all. It is already long overdue.

Mr. D™: I love Sci-Fi. I really do. Listened to Star Wars and Perry Rhodan on tape at the age of 5 even before I saw the movies.
Just for mentioning Perry Rhodan I will leave this one here.

...So STASIS just came out and soon SOMA will make its appearance. They look pretty decent SF games to me, if you like that kind of games.

If you're not adverse to Steam Duskers looks interesting....

I barely remember those tapes. Unfortunately I sold them about 10 years ago :( I used to read also a huge amount of Science Fiction books throughout the years starting in primary school. used to have nearly 400 books. But the past years I stopped reading at all.

So Limit Theory. I will look that up. Thanks!

Recently, I found out that the Perry Rhodan tapes I liked the most are available for purchase again in the form of MP3 files:

Posting the link to a saved HTML document instead of a link to a website was the most ridiculously stupid thing I've done in quite some time. XD

There are plenty of good scifi games released all the time. Just recently we've had Stasis, Satellite Riegn and Shadowrun Hong Kong.

That said, there's definitely always room for more.

Well, sci-fi is a very broad category. From what Mr. D mentioned in his first post it's rather about space sci-fi. The Shadowrun games are fantastic, but if you're looking for something with, say, Star Trek flavour- that ain't it.

He mentioned other games as well. But true enough, space games have been screwed over bit of late. Elite Dangerous suddenly needlessly became an MMO. Star Citizen... who even knows any more? Is it even going to get a release or is it going to keep expanding until it becomes vapour? It might still be good.

No Man's Sky looks absolutely amazing though.

I think he meant more along the lines of titles that are likely to be released this decade.

I'm a bit irritated by that game. :D
So many people make a huge fuss about this game, although the developers can't properly express what their game is about.
If their game is simply a exploration sand-box with combat and trading why can't they just say that?
I've watched a few interviews about No Man's Sky and the impression I got is that you can do almost nothing in this game and the devs couldn't even properly convey why the game is good at what it does.

I for one hope that Limit Theory will be released because judging from what the developer promised I see far more potential in this game.
If you are looking for a space sim check out Starwraith Games. Evochron Mercenary for a full freeform game or Arvoch Alliance for mission-based combat.

The teasers have been amazing... the gameplay videos, not so much. Looks great, if you want to go planet hopping while collecting pokemon and shooting rocks. Again, like many modern games, it's a lot of shine and polish on the chrome, very little under the hood.
