Matewis: I wish I could've experienced vanilla wow, but internet was simply too prohibitively expensive over here back when it released. Specifically, uncapped connections were obscenely overpriced.

Luckily I managed to get a little bit of gametime in on a custom server, and those first couple of levels were magical. I'm a total sucker for vanilla wow's atmosphere. BC not so much :P
I am still waiting for a quality and blizzlike Wrath Server.

I wanna be in Northrend when it was relelvent.

I wanna raid in Ulduar and ICC.

I mean listen to this music:

Awesome. Though I wasn't nuts about BC's atmosphere, I was totally on board with a lot of WotLK. Grizzly Hills and Sholazor Basin being my favorite. Especially the latter where I got my green proto-drake!
Sadly I didn't get to do much of any raiding in WoW, but I imagine raiding fresh locations must've been quite incredible, especially in vanilla.

It was a complete piece of shit. Raiding has never been better than now.
We did raids a few times, but they weren't any fun for us.

It was stand here, do that , then that, then move, and so on.

There was no room to improvise or mess around.

And you had to do them over and over and over again.

Not much to add to that; mirrors my raid fun-o-meter.

What was wrong with it compared to now?

Back in the olden days:

1. When you die in a instance, you release spirit in the only graveyard in the zone where the raid is and usually these are FAR away where the instance is. And in the case of certain raids like Blackwing lair, you had to go through the dungeon prior to blackwing lair case in point Upper Blackrock Spire. Which is why they added a thing that teleports you directly to blackwing lair's entracne.

2. Not all class specilizations were viable for raiding. The Protection Warrior was the only viable tank (A class made to get the attention of all the monsters/enemies), Priest were the only viable healers, and many other specs for Damage Dealers were completely worthless save for a select few.

3. In the time of vanilla WOW it can take FOREVER took invite and organize a group of 40 people because some of the raids were MADE for 40 people, realistically 25 can do it but the raids are so hard that you needed the extra 15 people to tag along. But this did made joining Guilds all the more viable.

4. Attunment quest, you cannot access the raid unless you have done the attunment quest that unlocks and leads you to the raid, so not only do you need 40 people, you also need all of them to unlock the raid themselves, each and everyone of them had to do this.

5. The raids themselves were very experimental at times because this was Blizzard's first time doing an MMORPG making content like this. There are horror stories of bosses that are so bullshit its insane.

-A Red Dragon in Blackwing Lair killed some many groups because of his "Death Debuff" that he was nicknamed "The Guild-Breaker"

-The final boss in the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj, C'thun, was never beaten until he was nerfed/made easier.

-The Four Horseman boss in the undead floating fortress called Naxrammas required 8 Tanks when mostly you just needed 2 combined with the fact that Warriors are the only viable tanks and you can see why this boss was so hated and infamous.

And raiding was still bullshit like this up to Burning Crusade I have heard stories have how broken the BC raids were, they were getting patched on a daily basis.

Wrath of the Lich King was perhaps the time when raiding was finally perfected.
Best bug in Early WoW was dying underground in the Hive in Un'Goro crater and appearing the Westfall spirit healer.

Something similar happened to me, I died while at the same time was the portal to leave a dungeon and it bugged out and instead of a spawning me in Elwynn Forest, it spawned me at Southshore, which is FAR North from where I died.

At least you where on the same continent.

Something my wife did in early WoW was extreme Herbalism. She would go herbing in areas much (20+) level higher than her.

ShadowWulfe: Is there a way to play WOW alone and without really having to deal with other people?
Yes, just play the official WoW. Warlords of Draenor is so lonely, you can do everything solo. In instances, nobody will ever talk and everyone moves so organised that you might think they are NPCs. You pretty much don’t have to deal with people anymore, unless you want to do raiding (which you don’t have to do). If you never played WoW before, there will be an abundance of quests and zones to explore that will keep your busy for weeks and weeks (it used to be months and months).

Wow ok, thanks for the explanation. I didn't realize it used to be that bad.

cw8: Ragnaros in vanilla and MC is a huge learning step for first time raiders. My memories of MC still lives on very well today, mostly good memories, had a lot of fun wiping, getting through the obstacles of vanilla gameplay and then getting the first kills of each boss. But seriously though, MC was nothing compared to Naxx40... Even when we had MC, BWL, ZG, AQ20 and 1/2 of AQ40 on farm status, we wiped continuously in Naxx40, even the first boss in every wing took us near 2 weeks of raiding nearly everyday for 4 hours just to get our first kill, I don't even wanna mention ridiculous bosses like The 4 Horsemen.

I played 2 years of WOW as a hardcore player. I became casual shortly after BC came out and when I reached 70 and did heroic 5 mens. Then became on and off player all the way till Cata came out. I quit totally after Cata.
Yea, we never made it nearly that far. We only had about 30ish people that showed up every time and another 25 or so that were more casual/undergeared up and coming folks we had to fill with.

Only got as far as ZG and AQ20 before BC came out... Not long after that the guild fell apart because of some real life health issues with the leader's wife and some drama. I drifted around after that, never finding a guild I wanted to stay in very long, but happily by LK you almost didn't even need one. (at some point I made my own guild with just my alts in fact, and was still able to do raids/instances whenever)... they just weren't as fun as those old ones.

I think the dumbing down/ making everything easy drives off some people like me.

Think the main thing I liked about BC in fact was that Alliance Shaman was a class now...

Having raid gear, high end mounts and all made you special in vanilla... and meant you worked for it quite a bit. It's just not like that any more.
I was really glad I quit right as Cata was coming out... a lot in this thread seemed to leave not long after.
