So my high school's Marching band camp started today. Yeah, I'm not too excited to lose my last two weeks of summer, but at least my birthday falls on Saturday and not a band day. Anyways, we spend 8 hours out in the sun every day now for two weeks, and I have already gotten some sunburn on my arms and face. I put some aloe gel stuff on it, but I was just wondering if any one here has some other ancient family secrets or something for getting rid of, or healing faster, sunburn.
If you're curious by the way, I play first Trumpet in my band.
Be careful what advice you take here. Some 'cures' will do more harm than good with certain skin types.

E45 is a pretty good all rounder for skin damage. But I would advise caution if there's broken skin involved.

The key is not just aloe, but the quantity.

Goopfulls of the stuff. Slather it on there until you look like "Spud" from the Ghostbusters.

Then get the (bleep) out of the sun and replace the aloe with SPF 10 billion when you get back in it.
DON'T GO OUTSIDE!!!!

Too late, I'm in it to win it.
Yogurt. Helps both with the burn and with the healing of it.
Then remember to use sunscreen, or clothes that cover your arms, as well as a wide brim hat.
Use sunscreen. Seriously. You're not just protecting against sunburn, but wrinkles and skin cancer down the road.

The higher the SPF (the number) the better the protection. Go with at least 30; 50 is better. Since you're in a marching band, I'd also recommend using a sport formulation, which resists being sweated away. Even so, reapply it every 2-3 hours if you can.

Don't forget to apply it under your collar and sleeves (and a bit higher up your legs and under your socks if you're wearing shorts). As you move around, the skin near the edge of clothing, which you think would be covered, often isn't,

Also do the tops of your ears, your eyelids (if you're not wearing UV-rated sunglasses at all times), your neck and jaw, and even your scalp if your hair is short. Prevention is far better than recovery; aloe will keep the skin moist and ease some of the pain, but it does nothing to reverse the sun damage itself.

I am not joking, but spider webs do help!

Yes modern medicine is picking this up and you might be able to buy it already.

But that would be more for real burns and not a bit red.

curd is supposed to help as well, same as yogurt.

And to help the skin, use some good olive oil, makes the skin more flexible (you could also use gun oil)

My thoughts exactly.

I recommend quark (curd), the regular kind works better than low-fat. Great for cooling in general and for all kinds of injuries. Make sure that it's fresh from the fridge and replace it after 20 minutes or so. You'll notice the quark being lukewarm so wipe it all off and smear a new layer on yourself. Some people recommend making wet packs with the quark inside a towel but I apply the quark to the skin directly. More messy but more effective. It's not like you'll walk around the neighborhood covered in quark to scare all the kids. This is a cheap home treatment to reduce pain and inflammation.

Next time you expect to stand in the sun for more than an hour, wear a hat and long sleeves. I wear long sleeves and long trousers even when I go into the desert, even the Bedouins cover up under the unforgiving sun.
I also wear a cap with a neck flap - this is absolutely crucial as a regular baseball cap is useless in protecting the neck.If you can't find such a cap, you can improvise with stuffing a towel under the back edge of the cap, even kitchen paper towels work but might violate band dress etiquette. A discreet all white neck flap shouldn't bother anyone. When I wear sandals, I even stuff paper towels between the upper side of my feet and the sandals which prevents the feet from getting burned. Judging from the way people look at you when you walk around like that it possibly looks silly but it's better then getting burned, and it works. Here's a photo of my sun protection outfit, in this case I'm even wearing gloves for extra protection as the exposure to full sunlight was for several hours without a break, in a very hot climate region:

I don't know what to do with existing sunburn, but next time you're in the sun, use SPF 70 cream. Anything which claims to be "organic" is a trap for hipster chicks, avoid. Anything which recommends a specific SPF to fit your particular skin tone is a trap for hipster chicks, avoid. The healthiest skin tone is your natural skin tone. Tan (as in, darkening skin with UV light) is for idiots. If you feel the need to look like an idiot for whatever reason, buy bronzing solution in a makeup store.

Really good advice is to avoid, as much as possible, being exposed to the sun, especially during its peak hours (11 morning to 5 in the evening). Before going out, don't feel ashamed to use some sunblock on you. If you are a girl, carrying an umbrella wouldn't hurt either, it is august after all and everyone knows that the umbrella, a.k.a "PARASOL", which translates to shield against the sun (french word?), was initially invented and used for against the sun, not rain. Or a hat, if you are a guy. Sunglasses and dark shades would be good, too. In this matter, as well as in most matters relevant to medication, the "Beware not to fall ill instead of curing it later" approach, applies. It is always best to take the best precautions available, so as to avoid having to deal with them to cure, later.

Forget all the mumbo jumbo about cremes, yogurt, cucumber slices, etc. They will get your skin worse. Forget also anything sold outside. Aloe vera is good, but not the unspeakable mixtures that medicine stores sell... Find a plant, rip off a juicy leaf, squeeze it to drop the stuff, put it on your skin location that suffered sun damage and rub, careful to cover the entire area, gently and lightly. 2-3 times a day and the burn should heal after small time. Also, if there is remaining aloe extract in that leaf, it is a pity and a waste to throw it away, you can ingest it, it is perfect for the entire digestive system, especially stomach. It is very bitter, though. This stuff also helps in hair regrowth, especially when coupled with rosemary essence.

And keep yourself regularly hydrated. If not, burns worsen, or at least they feel like it.
Yep best advice is to better dont get any sunburn first use sunblocker for astronauts if you can get ;-)

But if you have a sunburn best is not the costly pharma stuff which says "with aloe" but aloe itself!
Try to get some plants and cut two leaves and skin them. Use the inner jelly to rub this all over the burn best advice ever - gotten from an old Balinese.
Be careful with the sunscreen, you need some to prevent you from getting a sunburn, but sunscreen also reduces the amount of Vitamin D you're producing. So, you wind up having to be outside longer to produce the same amount of vitamin D.

Personally, I don't bother with sunscreen most of the time. I live fairly far north and I tend not to go outside a whole lot when the evil day star is out there.

Also to the extent possible, it's better to go out in the morning or the evening when the sun isn't directly over head.

Generally aloe and vinegar work well. And yes, avoiding the sunburn is the best. Back when I was in China they had this multi-purpose ointment for things like this. No idea what it was, but I think there was some menthol or camphor in it. It would make the burning stop.

Why the irony? Sunburn is a strictly "failure to take precautions" case. You walk outside during peak sun hours, without putting sunblock lotion, without seeking shadowy shelter, you get it. Is it bad that i state the obvious? I don't tell that to play wise guy, last summer i got severe sunburns too!

Also, my sunburns vanished after two days by applying natural aloe extract over them. I didn't write fantasy movie scenario.

And aloe in pharmacies is terrible. First of all its a mixture and aloe in it is very diluted. Then it is not fresh. And lastly, you pay for it. Have you tried it yourself? Aloe, i mean. If not, kindly plead to not be so ironic? This is a very useful substance which works well and fast.
