so we got a thread about games that didnt age well http://www.gog.com/forum/general/the_games_that_didnt_age_well_thread
and a thread about games that got better over time http://www.gog.com/forum/general/games_that_have_reverse_aged

so how about a thread about games that were good to begin with have stayed good and will always be good despite time and technology marching on ?

timeless games in other words

i will start with some of the usual suspects

super mario bros 1 on the nes
this game is 30 years old now it was revolutionary in 1985
levels instead of screens level warps 32 levels and a host of secrets
but more then that the gameplay was pitch perfect easy to pick up easy to play and hard to master even nowadays smb 1 is all that

tetris :
just like smb its easy to pick up and learn to play and hard to master
especially when it speeds up
Tetris obviously. And the classic "come with Windows" games: Solitaire and Minesweeper.

And although I'm not the greatest fan of it: Pacman.
Pac Man
How about the early arcade games (if they are allowed to be included?)
Pac Man will always be fresh and easy to play.

toxicTom: Tetris obviously.
Thanks. Now I've got that tune stuck in my ear again!

But I think Ultima 7 is still as good as it was.

And other than that: Nethack!
Sonic The Hedgehog 2

I plugged that in for my niece as her first video game experience last week and she immediately picked it up an had a blast.

The UI of Ultima 7 has not aged very well (IMO). It's a great game, granted.

Nethack seconded.
Chess.
Master Of Orion.
Heroes of Might And Magic 3

I can still spend countless hours playing those games.
Sacrifice, of course.
Deus Ex.
Worms
DOOM

I'm going to enjoy playing it even after 2050

Definitely Doom.
Red Alert 1

Yezemin: Sonic The Hedgehog 2

i think the ease of pick up and play is very important in a timeless game
no complicated layouts or explanations just pick up and go

i dont like platformers and im not a huge sonic fan but the first 4 sonic games are very easy to pick up and play too
