As for some of the games you've played, here are my thoughts:

- Serious Sam: The First Encounter: I liked it, but it's not my favourite type of fps. All those enemies and mayhem are fun, but after a while it gets repetitive and as you go on, the more difficult it gets and frustrating and tiredness comes into play

- Clive Barker's Undying: I liked it very much. Thought the atmosphere was great. Why did you find it boring? Did you get to first boss? I ask because the game takes a lot of time to get to it, but after that it speed things up.

- Grand Theft Auto III: The gameplay of this one didn't age well. Playing it today can be frustrating. However, if has the patience and the will to get use to it, it's still a pretty fun game to play.

- Half-Life: Blue Shift: it's still fun, but yeah I agree that it might be the weakest of the 3.

Undying isn't a bad game, but I sort of agree with Petrus. I wanted to like it, but I found a lot of the combat to be monotonous and not very dynamic, especially in the last area before the final boss. There's a part early in the game that's fresh in my memory, after you get the War Cannon, where you have to backtrack the exact way you came from and you have to fight a repeating pattern of the same basic encounter until you get there. That's where I just got too bored to continue when I tried to replay it. It did draw me in enough for me to complete it once.

My favourite shooters from the year are Halo: CE and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. The latter was one hell of a challenge on the highest difficulty though. I also like Serious Sam.

Shame the PC version of Silent Hill 2 hasn't gotten a GOG release. That's one of the best games of 2001 IMO.

What a phenomenal year! Unfortunately going to have to sit out, but if I had the time I wouldn't be able to make up my time which one to pick. AVP2 or a another Startopia playthough perhaps.

I can't remember exactly why I found it boring now. But I've noticed that I've grown less fond of FPS games in recent years. I guess it's because I'm getting poorer at these types of games. Serious Sam was the first FPS ever I had to set difficulty to below Normal. I used to play any FPS on second highest difficulty.

As for me, I think i'll try playing the following:

Aquanox (trying to finally beat this game for once)
Anachronox (also trying to finally beat this game for once)
Clive Barker's Undying (replaying for the nth time)
Return to Castle Wolfenstein (also replaying for the nth time)
Runaway: A Road Adventure (due in part to Pateralf's pic/etc making it seem tempting to play :))

Honorable mentions/Suggestions to others:

Arcanum (great intro/dialogs/etc...would have added it to my list, but didn't want to add too much)
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (a nice little BG game....played some of it on ps2 awhile back)
Devil May Cry (nice little resident evil candidate turned new series' first entry)
Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel (somewhat decent side game in the fallout setting)
Half Life: Blue Shift (played many times already....a nice little expansion for HL, albeit a bit short)
Harry Potter 1 (nice little game, although a bit difficult to get running on some modern systems)
Max Payne (righting wrongs in noir york city....nuff said)
Serious Sam: First Encounter (lovely little "enemy wave" FPS with plenty of silly lines and things to see)
Uplink (nice little sim, albeit with a difficulty curve spike[with req. items/money/skills] part way into the game)

Wiz 8 is nice :) Btw, if you ever get to playing it: i'd recommend installing/using the combat animation speedup mod, else each battle (they're usually wandering mobs) will take ages to complete.

Imo it had some nice lore and what not, though(pages/hidden stuff found via scrying/etc)....plus a very nice menu tune/soundtrack.

As for combat, I enjoyed trying the various spells to mix things up a bit.

Jah, RtCW is a very decent game.....a shame the "remake" Old Blood isn't as good(though it is still decent enough).

I practically always play my games on normal, no matter the genre. I don't like super challenge games where I have to keep repeating the same sections over and over again. Maybe that's why I never played a Dark Souls game.

Maybe it was all the near empty rooms in some areas(like in the "mansion hub")?

Speaking of, I liked that one could "backtrack" every now and then (mainly in the "mansion hub") to find things like: hidden things (found via scrying), extra ammo/items, and sometimes new (previously locked) rooms/areas to explore & NPCs (mansion staff) to chat with.

I'm mostly the same.....even when younger I disliked having to repeat game sections over and over too much. I was(and am) like "it's a game, not work...it's supposed to be fun and enjoyable" :)

I played the first game(demon's souls) a bit, and got a bit discouraged by things like the need to change classes to beat certain enemies/parts, and also having to backtrack a bit if I lost before reaching a checkpoint. I do like the lore/graphics/etc, though.

By the by: my list/etc(with a newly added game) is in post 22........when you have time, that is :)

I completed two missions from Caribbean Pirates / England Campaign.

In the third mission there's this one spot in the sea where ships inexplicably go kaboom and sink (well, they always go kaboom before sinking).

I completed 3 levels of Blade of Darkness.

I never played this game when it came out but heard people saying that it's a precursor to the Dark Souls series, which scared me a bit since I haven't played a Dark Souls game ever.

Since I'm not really a fan of super difficult games, I read that Zoe the Amazon would be the easiest character to play with, and so I went with her.

First thing I noticed was how the character movement is clunky, especially if one is used to play today's hack & slash games with smooth controls and animations. But Blade of Darkness is from 2001, so it's kind of expected. It's not super bad, but it requires one to get used to it.

As for the game being difficult, so far I don't think it is. Most of the times I died was more to do with said clunkyness than the game being challenging. Sure, this one requires more strategy than other, more arcady hack & slash games where you can just run up to the enemies and kill them right off. But so far, the enemies haven't been all that challenging (including the two bosses I killed so far). Of course, part of this might be because of playing with the Amazon who use spears and a bow as weapons, giving me and an advantage of not having to get too close to the foes.

Regarding the levels themselves, they are wider and longer that I was expecting, because there's always some backtracking, but nothing too major. They're not super detailed but get the job done. But what they're lacking in detail they compensate in atmosphere.

One thing is for certain: the game grabbed me and I'm always thinking on when I'll have the chance to play some more.
