Breja: Heard it all before. Two of my close friends are big fans of this stuff, and tried to convince me. But they can't. Because it's not that I think all anime must be shit, it's just that I literally can't stand looking at it. Makes me want to puke. And with all the great stuff I've still got left to see that does not make me feel like vomiting, I feel little need to force myself through whatever anime masterpiece anyone recommends.
It's 7 minutes.

So tell me, the difference between what some folks call anime, and your garden-variety comic book?

The big eyes?

What exactly makes you "puke"?
That was very cool, actually... Although it could do without the big eyes ;)
"Big eyes" don't concern me much. I grew up watching Astro Boy as a young girl, didn't consider him to be anime. Just a kickass cartoon.

Then came 1960's Batman, if I was a good girl and ate all my supper.

I honestly don't get the big deal about anime.

Why is it any different than a cartoon?

Indeed. And? Why would I want to look at something ugly for any amount of time, if I don't have to?

I'm not sure what my garden-variety comic book is. There are plenty of artists in comics with widely different styles. Some I love, some I can't stand. But I think it's pretty easy to see that western comics don't look anything like manga/anime.

The way it looks. The way it moves. The way it... is. It's just a matter of taste. I'm not saying you should hate it too, that anime is objectivly crap. It's just that I can't stand it, just as I can't stand anything japanese really. It does not mean I hate Japan. It's just that my sense of aesthetics is uniformly western.

Actually the new "streamlined" look that's become somewhat popular among western comic artists has a lot in common with anime (and I like it even less than many anime styles). It also has little detail, very abstract proportions etc..

I don't really see that in comics, but the way the new animated movies from DC look does look anime-ish. And I really dislike it. My heart breaks when I look at that, and think back to Batman: The Animated Series.

Yeah, that show had an amazing look. Too bad that it also already embraced quite a nasty design in its last season. is how we remember and love the Joker and out of nowhere he began looking [url=http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120708002002/thebatmananimatedseries/images/3/3a/The_Joker.jpg]like this (and that really was still on the same show with the same voice cast, mind you). I have no idea what the hell happened there. I sometimes think that they may have experienced budget cuts and were forced to go for lazier character designs that are easier/cheaper to animate.

True, the orginal look was best, though some characters actually look at least as good if not better in the last season. Scarecrow's look is a vast improvement in my opnion, he finally lookes really creepy, and Batman himself looks good. I always liked the costume without the yellow oval more.
