kustridaren: What happens to games when the company owning the game becomes defunct? Is the game abandoned / lost or is someone still owning the game / source code?
The exact answer likely depends on the laws of the country in which the now-defunct company was located but in most Western-style capitalist democracies I suspect the answer is some variation of the idea that because the game is an asset it continues to be owned by whatever person(s) or organization(s) owned the company, unless some alternate legal arrangement is made such as:
1. A pre-existing contract that assigns ownership of the game (and possibly related assets) to another person, group, or organization (such as an investor or publisher) in the event the company folds
2. A bankruptcy proceeding that awards the company's assets to a creditor or sells the company's assets to raise funds to pay off creditors
3. A sale arranged by the company's owner(s) to recover whatever monetary value they can from the now-defunct company
4. An estate or probate proceeding (in the event the company's owner was an individual who is now deceased) that transfers ownership of the deceased's assets to another person or organization according to the deceased's will and/or the laws of the country involved
