SandyKoala: Do the Xwing / Tie Fighter combat sims even work on modern computer systems?
They would certainly be sweet to be able to play them again.
I have X-Wing Alliance here and it installed and worked ok on Windows XP without messing around, but does not work on Windows 7/x64 at all unfortunately. I assume the older games probably fail on Windows 7 also. It might be possible to get them to work if someone has experience mucking around though - such as the talent at GOG.com :)
But as far as the games being made available here some day, GOG would make them work on modern systems first before they were made available so we don't need to deal with the torture ourselves. :) That's a big part of the anticipation of them showing up here is the ready-to-play aspect. I think aside from my own enthusiasm for the series on its own right, another part I'm excited about them is that when I played them originally I had a crappy $20 potentiometer based Radio Shack joystick, and now I have $700 worth of high end flight gear that is programmable to work with anything and I'm pretty pumped to be able to configure all the buttons and gizmos to work with Star Wars craft and play these old classics "the way they should be played". :) Mind you, I have the complete GOG Wing Commander series also and could get some of my fill with those too, but I favour the Star Wars games a bit more and wanted to start out with them. :)
C'mon Disneywan-Kenobi, save us! You're our only hope!
