clarry: EDIT2: can you try codename: outbreak and see if there's a way to make it run with acceptable framerate?
As per https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19888 I opened CONFIG.INI and set:

UseVideoTextures=0
NoMovies=1

To get the game to start properly. I found that setting "NoSort=1" helps a *lot* with the framerate (at the cost of introducing some graphical glitches with object pop-in), but not enough for it to be acceptable (at least to me) & no other settings I tried changing made much of a difference. For now it looks like all we can do is wait for further improvements to Wine.

immi101: But if you find some time to test the patch, I'd appreciate the feedback. :)
At some point I still want to test this if it works on windows as well, and post it in the interstate forum, where it might be easier to find for others ;)
I can confirm that the patch also works for me. Fantastic! Scene 5 jump is doable now, and I can finally finish the game. The sky is also rendered properly. Thanks a lot for your effort!

One minor problem that I see however is that car animation in cutscenes doesn't work correctly (the cars literally jump around). I also observe the same issue with the patch from WineHQ that I mentioned before. I am not sure if this issue is specific to my computer, so it would be good to verify it independently. Also do you think the same patch can be used to fix nitro.exe from the Nitro Pack? From what I read it seems to have exactly the same bug in the code as i76.exe.
Game: Tales of Monkey Island

Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 750Ti
Graphics driver & version: Proprietary 370.28
Wine version(s) tested: Wine Staging 1.9.19 via PlayOnLinux, CrossOver 15.3.0

Install notes: Requires d3dx9 (install DirectX 9 Modern in CrossOver)
If using PlayOnLinux, run the game from/create shortcuts for "MonkeyIsland101.exe" to "MonkeyIsland105.exe" for episodes 1-5 respectively.
How well does it run: Almost perfect
Details: Started a game & played for a while (and briefly tested that the other episodes start up ok), seems to run perfectly except that when you quit the game PlayOnLinux complains that it crashed. Tested with virtual desktop and CSMT enabled.

Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 750Ti
Graphics driver & version: Proprietary 370.28
Wine version(s) tested: Wine Staging 1.9.19 via PlayOnLinux

Install notes: For music playback to work you need to install devenum and quartz (install DirectX 9 Modern in CrossOver) and add an override for winmm (native, builtin). You may also need to select CD music ingame.
If using PlayOnLinux, run the game from/create a shortcut for "HEROES2W.EXE".
Before playing, set set compatibility mode for Win95 or the game will crash a lot. Also run "Graphic Setup.exe" to set the display resolution - select windowed mode as any resolution changes don't seem to apply if running full screen.
How well does it run: Almost perfect
Details: I've only played for a short time so far but it seems to run perfectly for the most part; however as noted above resolution changes don't seem to apply when running the game full screen and it froze on exit once. The "main" version of this game uses the DOS version & it's probably better to use that in DOSBox for Linux instead.

Details: Played through the tutorial & played a new game for a while, no sign of any problems. Tested with virtual desktop enabled.

Open source engine reimplementation "VCMI Project":
There is an open source engine reimplementation for HOMM3 that's playable natively on Linux - it's not yet feature complete but it does sound like it's quite playable (I haven't tested it myself yet). Find out more here: http://forum.vcmi.eu/portal.php

Graphics card: AMD RX 480 8GB
Graphics driver & version: Open source, with Mesa 17.3.2 from Padoka's stable Mesa PPA
Wine version(s) tested: Wine 3.0 (with CSMT and virtual desktop enabled)

Install notes: Requires directmusic (in CrossOver install "Direct Music")
Run the game from/create a shortcut for "hitman.exe"
Use the OpenGL renderer
How well does it run: Perfect
Details: Have played for a short time, seems to run perfectly as long as you use OpenGL mode.

Widescreen support:
For widescreen support (not proper widescreen support, unfortunately) follow the instructions as detailed here: http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Hitman:_Codename_47#Widescreen_resolution

- Run the game once to select OpenGL renderer & set things up as you want
- Locate hitman.ini in the game's directory and open it in a text editor
- Change the resolution setting to match your desktop (or virtual desktop if enabled) and add these two lines at the end:

Window
StartUpperPos 0,0

Then save and exit.

There is another widescreen fix by nemesis2000 that should give proper widescreen support, but that requires the Direct3D renderer and doesn't work well in Wine. I was unable to get it working with Wine Staging 2.0; with Wine Staging 2.8 it worked but the game speed was extremely fast.

Wine wrapper
I have put together a Linux Wine wrapper for this game. For more information, see the release thread in the game's forum: https://www.gog.com/forum/hitman_series/hitman_series_for_linux

Any word on running Codename: Panzers Phase One/Two in WINE? Their AppDB entries are very old...

Wine version(s) tested: Wine 3.0 (with CSMT enabled)

Install notes: Install & play.
Run the game from/create a shortcut for "hitman2.exe"
How well does it run: Perfect
Details: Have played through the start of the game and first mission, seems to run flawlessly.

Widescreen support:
Some widescreen fixes are detailed here: http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Hitman_2:_Silent_Assassin#Widescreen_resolution

I've tested both of the Hor+ options & both appear to work, although I prefer & have been using nemesis2000's fix. Note that nemesis2000's fix will require you to restart the game after accessing the graphics menu as it'll crash when you try to play if you don't & the other fix will disable anti-aliasing. Whichever fix you use, if you're running the game with virtual desktop enabled, set the virtual desktop's resolution to the resolution you intend to use for the game.

To use nemesis2000's fix you'll also need to add an override for d3d8 (native, builtin).

That's a bit beyond me, sorry. Since the bug is reported hopefully someone from the Wine dev team will fix it :)
