System overclock: engage.

System Shock: Enhanced Edition, the seminal horror FPS/RPG (or "immersive sim", if you're being fancy), has been further enhanced with the Source Port free update. It's also 50% off until September 17th, 3 pm UTC.

The game has been rebuilt from its original source code and it packs some pretty shocking improvements, including 4K resolution support, official support for fan missions and mods, smoother camera rotation, improved control scheme, support for both Direct3D and OpenGL, mouselook support, plus it fixes some of the bugs still scurrying about since the game's original release!

That should be enough to make even Shodan smile. Before she tries to kill you again, of course.

apehater: nope i didn't find any cfg file in the gamefolder or its subfolders

paladin181: Really dumb question: you sure it's the EE and not the classic edition?
Have EE installed, don't have that file either.

yep its the ee, but i guess that this cfg file is stored in an other hidden folder, like in modern games. i just didn't find it so far.

S_H_O_D_A_N: The German and French versions have a size of 184 MB while the English version has a size of 275 MB. Did they update only the English version?
There is no need for the other installers anymore as the Source Port update does include all three languages. You can change them in the games options.

The kexengine.cfg file is in the main folder of the game.

I am sorry, but not for me. What version of windows do you have?
avatar
nightcraw1er.488: It's not well presented. The store page appears to show this as new game to buy and if you goto library nothing in the library is marked as new/updated. I can find it if I search but it's not flagged as new/updated and hence I would have jumped to the same conclusion as this poster. Please sort your update system out as this is not the first item updated which doesn't get flagged or marked - dying light for instance.
avatar
omega64: Oh it did get marked, a week ago when the update happened.
Exactly. Which brings me to my question: Why does this announcement happen now and not the moment tha update actually was released here on GOG?

i guess this file gets created after a first successful start. thats why whe don't have it. gog just screwed it up ... AGAIN!!

god i just can't belive how much greedy shareholders could turn a great store into a sucking steam abomination!!!!

masterotaku: It has DX11 and OpenGL modes. But I don't know if non DX11 GPUs have the necessary OpenGL level.

I've tried the game for half an hour at 5120x2880, 8xMSAA, 60fps, 3D Vision, and it's great. A lot better than the original game in smoothness, controls and resolution (pls don't kill me, purists).

The only thing I miss is 5.1 audio. There's only stereo at most.

apehater: i can't play it on my 8800 gtx. getting an error message.
What kind of error message?

No and yes. You are right that the German offline installer still only has the old ee version which also still is multi language. However the same goes for the English updated version. So just download it and change the language. Works fine.
avatar
Magmarock: Awww Hell yeah. Perfect thing to play before the release of the remake and cyberpunk

No, it is not. It's multi language including audio.

Unfortunately you are correct - I just tested it.
However I uploaded my default config file for those of you who are unable to start the game the first time at all.
https://markoh01.lima-city.de/kexengine.cfg

GOG should provide one default config pre installed in their installer to prevent future cases now that they are aware of the problem.

I doubt this has to do anything with greed or steam ... it was a simple oversight in testing that could have happen to anybody.

Ah thank you - did not notice it. Yes, seems to be a DX11 error.

Yes the file gets created one you have started the game. It's a common mechanic many games have used in the past and it has nothing to do with GOG screwing up in any way. GOG didn't program this game.

indeed it has! especially for a store that offers games which work right out of the box, at least in theory. and its not one minor exception, its almost every time today, that gog does release shit, instead of proper testing and fixing before release. gog prefers to burn the money they got from their customers in exception for working old games, for moronic ideas (which by the way are also buggy don't work most of the time) like galaxy, achievements, profiles, crypting their offline installers, shoving malware into their offline installer and so on. they misuse their resources and fck up their customers. i'm not going to discuss this further on, if you have an other opinion, well thats your problem.

In my five years as a GOG customer I experienced major problems with a game only once. This game is not the one. It runs absolutely flawlessly. Fix your probably broken system if you can't get this and any other game running and get a decent graphics card that isn't totally obsolete in 2018.
