fishbaits: Unusually, it's almost all of steam that is dead.
Normally it's just a few parts.

https://steamstat.us/

Yet more proof that DRM is shite.
avatar
KneeTheCap: You do know that you can play your games even if Steam is down?
LOL

nicohvc: And Steam stills dead. DRM hurts and worsens the wound!

Thank god for GOG and drm-free
& Jim Sterling ;)
I couldn't care less.

fishbaits: Some games you can, but none of the multiplayer/co-op games/online only (even though single player games...).
Same goes for any that require online checks.
You don't say, online stuff won't work when the server(s) is/are down?
avatar
javihyuga: I hope they fix it before de GMG sale ends. I really wanted to get me Castlevania.
avatar
rampancy: Any idea on why they're doing it, or is it just for the sake of being dicks?
avatar
javihyuga: I searched info about the group and came to this.
Looks to me like the typical "I can be a dick because your security sucks".
You'll still be able to buy it in GMG sales, just means not being able to enter the key into steam until they get their act together.
It has begun. Hopefully.

qwixter: I suspect it's the gog linux users!

Painted_Doll: :DDDDD
I didn't do nothing, promise! :P

PS: While obviously multiplayer and online-only games are out of the question right now, I'm wondering about single-player and offline games in general: how does Steam manage game saves? I mean local saves vs cloud saves: is it left to every dev/game to implement it their way, or is there a client-wide global setting to choose between one way or the other?
I logged in just fine a minute ago *shrug* Library works, but it seems like the store and community parts are entirely overloaded at the moment.

Well developers can choose to implement it, but you can still enable/disable it per game.
I don't know if there is a global setting to disable it per default, but I know you can disable it per game since I've done so in the past.
Oh well, when I once in a blue moon want to play something from there this happens. Good thing I have plenty of games from Gog.

Assuming the game actually supports it (not all games do, especially the old ones), you have the choice to enable it or disable it. If you enabled it, the game saves both locally and on cloud.

Edit: Slow.

I see, thanks for the info. My condolences to those who opted for the 'convenience' of cloud saves, then. :P

Oh, never mind then. *smugness level decreasing*

The thought of losing access to thousands of dollars worth of games whether the fault lies with Steam (DDOS, etc.) or myself (job loss that force tough choices, i.e. no internet access for an extended period of time), has driven home the foolishness of having all (most) of my eggs (games) in one basket (Steam).

I am slowly adding as many of my Steam (drm) games to my GoG (non-drm) library as I can (and that are available on GoG), even if I have to buy them again for the second/third/forth time. GoG is not only a great service, but is also an insurance policy if I ever lose access to my content for an extended period of time locked behind layer(s) of drm.

If I remember correctly, Steam's offline mode can only be used for a finite period of time before you 'must' login again or lose access to your games permanently untill you do so. I've been foolishly neglecting this cold reality for far too long.

avatar
GR00T: Can't you buy it anyway and activate it after Steam is fixed? If GMG = Green Man Gaming, they just provide a Steam code, so doesn't matter whether Steam is up or not, you can activate it whenever you want.
I know I know. But if I already don't like buying Steam keys when it works (because of this), imagine the akwardness of buying a key when they have been DDoS'ed to hell xD
I'll probably get it, as I'm pretty sure they will be up and running in no time, but hell xD

Edit: aaaand it's up, as expected.

Appears to be another hacker group:
Steam servers DDoSed and taken down by Phantom Squad hacker group, gamers left in lurch during busy Christmas weekend

If you are a gamer, we told you earlier to watch out for this group of hackers who have promised havoc during the oncoming Christmas holidays. Right now they are showing a trailer of what they can achieve. Yes, we are talking about Phantom Squad who have promised to bring down Steam, Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox down during the week starting today.
