KnightW0lf: just wondering how people test the games do you just download the game and then quit steam or do you install first and then play it without steam?
Reading the OP is always a good idea:

pedrovay2003: HOW TO TEST GAMES FOR STEAM CLIENT DRM
Checking Steam games for DRM is a simple process: Just rename your main Steam program file and try to run a game. If the game runs, then it's DRM-free, and it does not require Steam at all. If it doesn't run, then it's dependent upon Steam or some other third-party DRM. An even better way of testing would be to copy the game folder to a totally different machine, but I understand that this may be difficult for a lot of people. In my experience, renaming the main Steam program file should suffice. Keep in mind, however, that renaming the main Steam program file will ONLY work to check for Steam DRM, and third-party restrictions may be missed; moving the game to an entirely different system really is the best way to check, if possible. If you discover a DRM-free Steam game that isn't on this list, please leave a comment with the game title and the operating system on which it was tested. We'll all love you forever!
Would be nice to add one column to the list to flag if the game is non GOG.

Can't fathom why games like Evochron Mercenaries don't make to GOG... perhaps too heavy for developer to maintain both platform?

Would be nice I agree - on the other hand it's more than easy to find that out for yourself.

There are some devs who simply don't want to go DRM-free, others think maintaining two platforms is too much work (I am glad if such people son't even bring their games to GOG tbh because we already have too many games here that don't get supported) and last but not least there is the GOG curation system which simply rejects some games for several reasons.

Jonathan_The_Gamer: Half-Life is perfectly playable in Xash3D engine.

Too bad Opposing Force and Blue Shift has some bugs.

I have tested this method and it runs great.. You could even delete the "steam version" of half-life and as long as you have the Valve folder in the directory, you should be able to run Half-Life just fine without Steam and still save space.

ok thanks
Ruiner works with no modification, saves confirmed. Tested on Windows 10.
ArmA Tactics is on this list: http://steam.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_DRM-free_games

However, when I make a rar archive off the installed game, close Steam and unpack the game outside of Steam I get the message: "The game cannot run without Steam. Restart through Steam now? Yes/No".

When clicking Yes, Steam starts to install the game (I had it deinstalled from Steam before testing), when clicking No, the game just closes.

So ArmA Tactics CANNOT be run without the client.

So it's not only on Linux, then. :\
Well, back in 2015 when I tested this game it ran perfectly fine without the client (see my original post here). Looking at the game's changelog it got updated several times since then and that probably is the reason why it doesn't work anymore.

So the paragraph "By keeping a log of the titles, players will be able to know which Steam games will NEVER be a problem to run in the future, at least not because of DRM in the games themselves." in the OP is obsolete and should be rephrased or removed entirely, at least judging by this example which AFAIK is the first time this has happened.

No worry. Don't forget Hexen II under the source port section if you have it as well. Now if only those and Heretic II could show up here for completion's sake...

Thank you for trying that out. I was hesitant on redeeming it because I was afraid it was tethered to Steam.
