SSolomon: Unions can be good. When they are in place to help the workers that cannot protect themselves. Pretty sure these voice actors could afford a lawyer and refuse to sign contracts that endanger their well being. Heres hoping the industry starves out this nonsense.
There are examples of modern unions that still work for both the good of the employees and the good of the company. i.e. Southwest Airlines. Just speculating on the reason that it works, I believe that the union sits on the company board and has "skin" in keeping the company both working and increasing profits. Most of the problems with unions, in the US at least, seem to be because the unions are after political power rather than the good of their member or the companies. They seem perfectly happy to see the companies fail as they can use their political influence to force taxpayers to pick up their pensions (as with GM).

With regards to the voice actors, the general discussion here has been great. It would seem to me that their union is functioning more like a guild than a union. Games are made better by good voice acting. If good voice actors want a share of the profits of a game (i.e. royalties), they should negotiate a lower up front payment (like Alec Guiness did with Star Wars) or as someone above suggested offer the additional service of promotion with bonuses tide to hitting sales numbers. In that last case, they really are joining the company as a contractor on the marketing team.

There are several examples of other performance artists that get paid for the first performance only. Consider the studio musicians that record the backing tracks for "solo" vocalists. The little guitar lick in that Katy Perry song that makes a hook that someone sings was played by someone who got paid for a day of work in the studio, but the royalties for the song go only singer, the composer of the song, and sometimes the producer. Is this wrong? That guitarist worked under an agreement (contract) and was paid. The fact that the song made several people millions of dollars later doesn't give that musician the right to retroactively demand more money.

F4LL0UT: Fine, but starting to use a different actor for the same role is like starting to use cartoon characters in a game that has been using a realistic style so far. Even if you have little respect for a voice actor's work, you sure as hell should care about consistency and it's impossible to maintain that if you switch actors.
This is an overreaction and depends majorly on the project.

Just saw this.

Don't go knocking on Aquanox :)
Not everything needs to be AAA production values.
Yes, I realize this thread is old.

A few years ago, one of the expansions for the swtor mmo was released without any of the voice overs from the major actors in the game. The reason being was stated to be the strike at the time. Someone just asked in chat if the strike was even still going on as they (and I) hadn't heard anything in years about it.

Appears the strike is over and has been for some time:

I was curious to see if we had discussed it here and just wanted to put this up as to finish the thread.

Ok, now when we hear that AAA development is very expensive and that's why there are lootboxes and other means to swindle our money - we know whose fault it is!

I have the solution for the actors strike although it needs more work.
