So the other day I booted up The Wolf Among Us on Gog Galaxy, noticed my saves were gone, thought it was just a bug from the game, no big deal, so started again on the chapter i was on.

Then I booted up Witcher 3, after 110 hours felt like doing some more world exploring, then I see that I only had the option to do a new game.... I go to where my save files were and they were missing. Anyone have any ideas cause I am all out after digging around.

I think you have the source of your problem right there.

Unfortunately, I agree with CharlesGrey. It was probably Galaxy that ate your saves.

Yeah. That's the source.

Well I was going to replay Witcher 3 once the 1.7 patch came out. Oh well.

I've heard similar ( sometimes worse ) Galaxy related horror storied around here, so it seems likely that Galaxy caused it somehow.

Sorry that I can't be more helpful. I opted not to use Galaxy, since I'm not much of a fan of these automated clients, much less buggy, unfinished ones. Currently it seems the little extra convenience it provides is far outweighed by the potential problems caused by it.

You could do a simple system search, in case Galaxy merely moved your saves elsewhere. More realistically, it probably erased them, for whatever reason. You might still be able to recover them with data recovery software.

Either way, while it's nice GOG are trying to provide an alternative to Steam's client, currently I really can't recommend using it. I might try it again once it's more stable, but for now it's probably best to do things manually.
Suggestion to gamers: backup your saves often.

Suggestion to Gog: add an option to auto-backup them often.
EDIT: feature wishlist here

I decided to search for Witcher 3 save and I opened the file location. It moved my save files into my videos folder. Now I am not sure if GOG galaxy moved it or if it was just my user error. In the end I figured it out with your advice. Thank you :D!

And I misclicked and gave the solution to you, no way to change it but that's good advice to backup saves.

Uh.. you probably misclicked and selected me for the solution.
I don't know if it can be undone, so let's give CharlesGrey some +1 ;)

I thought Galaxy was supposed to be another way to download GOG games. How exactly is it deleting the save files?

Hah, it was a slim chance, but apparently it was worth giving it a shot. :)

But I also agree with phaolo's advice -- it's a good idea to save often, keep multiple save files, and perhaps even make some copies to store on another device. That's especially important when you're playing complex games with heavy time investment and many user choices, such as Witcher 3.

Oh yeah... And don't trust Galaxy. :D

Suggestion, do things yourself, don't rely on client software. Download games via browser download, back them up offline, play offline, keep your saves mods offline on backup drives.

Most likely Galaxy had nothing to do with it at all, but it sure makes an awesome scapegoat if some random problem happens in a game and someone is angry and needs to blame something for it. Galaxy does not manage save games at all currently and they're usually stored in user directories rather than a game's installation directory anyway - far away from anything Galaxy actually touches.

"I can't figure out what happened, so Galaxy did it!" basically. :oP

Speaking of Galaxy, did they ever add the ability to install Galaxy to a custom user folder? Or is it still installing to some default folder in the C: drive?

It can be installed anywhere, but it stores data at runtime on C:\ProgramData seemingly rather suboptimally also. They've indicated they plan to adjust that in the future but not specified when it might show up. Hopefully one of the next few builds though as it's eating about 2GB of my SSD. :)

Yeah, I've never understood why it was defaulted it to the "ProgramData" folder. That's been the main folder since the alpha build.
