Hey Guys,

is Sleeping Dogs Definitve Edition now blocked in Germany?
Yet another game not avaiable because of what? Why did GoG do this?
I still have it in my Wishlist though, but what the hell is going on here?

Thought the game was USK 18 / PEGI 18 already?

Are we forced to use VPNs now to get the games we want on GoG?
(yes i know that would break the TOS, but what choice one has?)

Do you GoG guys even care / read what ppl write here?

So long

PS:
BTW GoG Developers, you folks realize that GEOBLOCKING is outlawed by EU right?
You know you break EU Law by GEOBLOCKING games, do you? (Valve does the same btw)

The Definitive Edition is still officially blacklisted In Germany.

Also only "unjustified" geoblocking is against the law. The German youth protection system might be crazy, but it's still a "justification".

The game is still on the BPJM's index. GOG apparently didn't realize this at first, and so the game was available to Germans for a short time.

PEGI ratings are meaningless in Germany and only the heavily censored version of Sleeping Dogs' original release had a USK 18 rating.
The Definitive Edition was always uncensored and Square-Enix never even gave it an official German release. They could probably get it off the index if they tried, but that would require effort and money; and SE probably doesn't consider that endeavour worthwhile.

I think that only applies if providing the content in question does not break an individual country's laws. Selling indexed games to Germans without any kind of officially sanctioned age verification would do exactly that.

No such thing in Germany. Just different flavors of oppression.

Just to make one thing clear. Sleeping Dogs and mostly every other game (with only a few exceptions) is NOT banned in Germany. It simply is not allowed to be advertized or to be sold to underage persons. Even IF a game would be "banned" you still are allowed to own it - in that case it just is not allowed to be sold anymore.

The reason for this is "youth protection" and no matter who you would vote for ... nobody would dare to change those laws and therefore "endanger" the youth.

I guess the reason for banning Sleeping Dogs is they're worried young, impressionable youth will see the game and want to become gangsters in Hong Kong?

The reason in most cases is much more simple. Whenever violence would give the player and advantage those youth protectors are scared that children might think that being violent would be a good way to win ... as the game showed. So in most cases it is a moral/ethic they want to keep. Violence is bad - especially unnnecessary violence.

Well, there is a version that's approved for public sale in Germany and the only difference is that the German version removes about a dozen or so finishing moves (including cartoon silliness like impaling someone on a swordfish).

Also, to elaborate on Marko's post: Yes, the uncut version indeed is not banned. However on Steam it is more heavily restricted (at the behest of Squeenix) than most games that are *actually* banned, to the point where you can't even redeem a foreign key using a German account. So while strictly speaking it isn't banned, the way the non-ban is implemented constitutes a de facto ban.

But as you said - that's Steams and Square Enix' decision and therefore at least this one can't be blamed on decisions made by German institutions like the BPjM. Germany does not ban games (in most cases) that's what I wanted to say. This is still not China after all.

If it goes for the super low sale price again, I can gift you it. I feel the region lock/regional pricing pain.
I think it was like 3 bucks.

Ehhh... let's not go there. The selection is considerably larger on the gog's Chinese storefront than the German storefront and I don't buy into the rather flawed logic of "Germany doesn't ban games, except when it does" either.
