Level 4, Yet Another Stoopid Death in Brogue. Sigh. Stupid me indeed. Just when I'm feeling I'm doing fairly well I ignore the pink jelly's one characteristic: splits in two when hit. So I keep hitting them like a fool, thinking, they gotta stop multiplying, which of course they don't. Get cornered and slimed to death.

(Torneko: The Last Hope enemy spoilers follow)

Torneko: The Last Hope again. To celebrate getting a Beat staff (the Warrior skill Disappear is overpowered, making stealing way too easy even in the More Magical Dungeon), I decided to take it, as a Mage, into the Ordeal Mansion (after giving it 99 charges). I also have a few other items, including some spellbooks, two World Leaves (revives you when you die, but only once each), an Earner staff (steals 75% of target's HP) and a heal pot, but no heal ring (heals 10 HP per turn). I started on B11 and make it to B26.

The deaths are as follows:

1. I fail to attack when I should have, being killed by exact count. Revived by World Leaf.
2. I don't remember this one (might have been Red Dragon breath). Revived by Farewell.
3. Killed by a Toxarrop's arrow (when you're a defenseless Mage, these are *really* deadly, capable of taking you down from full HP to 0 HP in a single shot. Ouch!) Revived by World Leaf.
4. After the Heal Pot was used up, low on HP, Red Dragons breathing fire on me. After a few turns, before I can reach an enemy to use my Earner staff on, the dragon breath does me in.

So, killed by a Red Dragon that wasn't even in the same room.

This deep in the Ordeal Mansion, some of the enemies are ridiculous.
* Toxarrops can kill Mages from a distance (if you are a different class, you should have a powerful shield to reduce the damage to something reasonable)
* Metal Hunters can kill Mages twice in one turn (so having one World Leaf left doesn't mean you're safe)
* Eyeballs can confuse you from anywhere in the room (and they actually appear in areas that are supposed to be much easier). If you're a Mage, this can cause you to forget a spell.
* Red Dragons can breathe on you from anywhere on the entire *floor* for 40 damage (20 with a suitable shield, which is not an option for Mages). When multiple Red Dragons spawn, you are in serious trouble if they're awake, even if they're nowhere near you. Good luck!
* Gold Slimes have a room hitting attack that will kill you if you have 200 HP or less, and will nearly kill you if you have more. Imagine this happening and a Red Dragon (that isn't even in the same room) breathing on you later in the same turn; do you think that's fair? (I haven't actually had this happen, but it seems plausible that this *could* happen; at least the Gold Slime needs to be in the same room as you to use this attack, and can only use it once.)
* Venom Zombies can permanently remove effects from your equipment, so your shield could lose its dragon breath protection, or your Pick could lose its "breakable" property. This might not be so easy to recover from, depending on the effect removed.
In Spelunky today, I managed to get to Hell for the first time in a long time -- and had quite a bit going for me, too (jetpack, 26 bombs, kapala, around 20 health, etc.). But, upon entering 5-1, I spotted Vlad's vault almost immediately, and, while seeking the best place to bomb through to get his amulet, I promptly skewered myself on the spikes that adorn his tower (my overexcited mind apparently just glossed right over them when scanning the environment). Definitely one of my more ignominious Spelunky deaths in a while.
