Oh FFS!
Another one?!

But seriously. Since R* are getting tons of money from there Online Services they most likely want to cut out the middle man like Steam to maximize profit.

OK, so....I kind of predicted this thing would happen sooner or later, and one of my examples for predicting who would have a launcher in the future was, surprise, Rockstar. Cause of course they would do that, and I even get the impression they would do that even without Take-Two as their big boss. They're that passionate about DRM, and anybody who played GTA V and IV know what I mean. For freck's sake, if your internet is unstable while V is loading, it sometimes interrupts to show you a black screen with text along the lines of "authentication required" until it verifies you threw the $60 or $30 on it, and even its offline mode only lasts for three days.

During installation, it will install all of that stuff. When uninstalling it, you would uninstall both the Launcher and Social Games Club, which is there with the whole package because why not, your PC is Rockstar's PC and they are free to do what they wish with it.

Now, about the San Andreas copy...I didn't download it, not that I would need to, I have my physical copy that I found by coincidence last month, sold in a used bookstore as the game's City Guides (the manual basically) which had the disc with it. Was a bargain, and its DRM is only as intrusive as "insert disc," and if you use mods, there are downgraders for the Steam version on GTA Forums that you can just use.

Now from what I'm hearing over at GTA Forums, it seems you need an internet connection to run the thing, and modding is difficult because it consistently triggers the auto-update mechanism, and tells you your game is out of date and must be updated. I love Grand Theft Auto. But I would love someone to one-up them with a Grand Theft Auto of their own, offer it DRM-free, and make fun of Rockstar in every radio ad that plays. This is ridiculous. Why do they care if a game they barely even update is outdated?

Anyways, welcome to the launcher future everyone. You (not necessarily GOG users) praised and hailed Steam as a so called "savior" of PC gaming. Congratulations, you saved PC gaming by making it a lot more fragmented, a toxic wasteland of DRM. If you wonder why people prefer consoles or old PC games, here's the answer. Not like it changes anything of course, we'll all complain about the hell that is PC then happily install Steam for Half-Life 2, Epic for Borderlands 3 & Denuvo, Rockstar for GTA V, Battle.net for Overwatch, Origin for Battlefield V, Ubisoft for Far Cry 5, Discord for Exclusive Discord Game, and more.

Maybe we should have killed the Original Client at its inception rather than let it proliferate and overshadow us.
Rockstar can shove both their launchers and love for drm more often layers of the crap up their arse. I'm not even touching their stuff with a ten foot pole.

Is this launcher even news, as implied in many of the comments here? I don't really know much about it, but I do know that a Rockstar Social Club account was already required if you bought GTA IV or V, even on Steam, and that for quite a while now several Rockstar games are sold as Rockstar Social Club keys instead of Steam keys on third party sites, and with higher discounts than on Steam.

That, and they do love DRM so much, they don't even content themselves with clients and put SecuRom (GTA IV) and Gameshield (L.A. Noire) on top of Steamworks and Rockstar Social Club. Which saved me some money, so thats cool.

Joke's on Rockstar. I still have the PS2 Vice City and San Andreas CDs.

I thought I read Win10 disabled SecuRom by default. So games with it are screwed ?

My San Andreas DVD works fine on Windows 10. Can't speak for III and Vice City, or other Securom games.

joppo: Aren't they? Hmm I could swear the OP says otherwise.
In my opinion, they offer the game, provided you install they spyware stuff. As we all know by this time, thanks to google, free of charge has some costs too ;)
I thought to myself, "sure, a 5th copy of San Andreas wouldn't hurt," but it seems it won't let me add it to my library.

Anyone else have the same issue?
While I prefer DRM free and buy everything I can here, if I'm going to use a client I don't really care what it is. I think wanting all your games from one place is frankly a bad thing, as it means you're tied to one company's whims for all time. Also I don't blame publishers for wondering why they're giving Valve 30% on an open platform. As much as people complain, I think every big developer having their own client is inevitable and not a big deal.
Steam updated GTA V on my laptop, when I started it, it installed the launcher automatically. So I got the freebie. :)
Remember that GTA San Andreas in that launcher is not Steam version. (but has the same files and bugs... to fix these you need latest version of Silent Patch)

Yeah, but as I am someone who abides by what's moral I'll not only pay them what they're legally bound to receive but also keep them from profiting in illegal ways with my data. I'm doing my part to keep them honest. :p

If they don't put old GTAs there (preGTA3) then what's the point?
Didn't check too closely on that last link looks like it wasn't the original site and it looks like Rockstar no longer offers GTA 1 and 2 for free.

Previous downloads from their site were:
GTAINSTALLERFREE.ZIP
GTA2INSTALLERFREE.ZIP
