For quite some time now, the review system on our platform hasn’t been ideal. And we know just how important reviews are, both for discovering new games and for sharing your own experiences with them.

That’s why we’re excited to announce that we’ve rebuilt the review system to make it clearer, easier to use, and more helpful for everyone.

So, what’s new?

Edit or delete your reviews anytime (with timestamps to keep changes transparent).

Better summaries with rating breakdowns at a glance.

Your own review is always pinned on top, so you can find it right away.

A dedicated “Reviews” tab on your profile (with the option to make it visible or hidden).

Up to 8,000 characters per review, plus better formatting, smoother scrolling, and dark mode support.

Improved reporting flow to help keep reviews fair and constructive.

We hope you’ll enjoy these changes and that they’ll inspire you to write more reviews, or even post your very first one!

Check out your new “Reviews” tab HERE.
GOG, thank you for not only adding the ability to change the 'Is this helpful to you?' yes/no responses (as, years ago, I had been a bit overzealously critical in my downvoting), but, also, enabling the modification of product reviews.

Previously, as I possess an unfortunate habitual disposition for altering sentence structure, I had refused to submit written reviews. Now, I am far more inclined to voice my excessively sentimental words of praise for beloved titles. : )

dnovraD: That would be wishful thinking at best. People use faulty but functional hardware all the time in computers. This among the billions of individual hardware configurations and 3 very different mainstream operating system choices would make definitive differential diagnosis impossible.
Faulty hardware and drivers should cause problems in other games and apps, usually blue screens. A simple, repeatable crash is usually a problem with an app (any DOSBOX is part of an app that includes it).

dnovraD: Reviews about external technical issues shouldn't be there in the first place, if you were to ask me.
I appreciate GOG reviews and they are the first thing I read. But if there is an insufficient number of reviews, I can always seek them out in other places. But, those other sites may not be reviewing the version sold on GOG. So the most valuable GOG reviews tells me whether the GOG version can be played to completion or not. A DOSBOX game could have a couple of reviews, all verified owners, most reviews 5 stars. One review, 1 star claiming the game crashes in one spot. Then I am left wondering whether all those positive reviews are based on GOG version playthrough or based on nostalgia. So it's nice to come across another review (or game forum discussion) that mentions a fix, or contradicts the reported bug. Sometimes I see a review on steam that says "get the GOG version." The most extreme scenario would be a publisher re-releasing a game with DOSBOX bundled and never playtesting the game all the way through and all reviews being nostalgia reviews.

Sometime I see a 1 star review saying there is some problem. Half the people say it's helpful, another half say it's unhelpful. Is it unhelpful because they don't like the 1 star rating, or because they didn't see the problem, or is it because there is a solution for the problem and they are angry at the reviewer for not finding it. I would like to know in a comment below such review.

dnovraD: For example, Creatures 1 is non-functional to me as none of the modules load. That's not a failing of the program, but instead is a system or function call failing to be translated or connected. (I'm using WINE.)
Yes it would be unfair to claim the game is buggy with it not working on WINE since the store page does not list it as a supported environment. But it is definitely useful for potential customers using WINE if you decide to include that in your review and make it clear that this did not affect your rating. It would nice if GOG had a search reviews feature so that someone could search for WINE in the reviews.

binteon: Regarding comments by developers:

It would be nice to know if bugs / crashes mentioned in a review had been fixed by a newer version. On steam developers will often make that comment. So I would be in favor of allowing any user (in case developer does not comment) to comment on reviews and if there is a concern about abuse perhaps these reply comments could be limited to indicating whether a bug or crash was fixed or if there is a workaround.
avatar
Cavalary: How would you police that? It'd mean every reply being checked to see whether it's about what it should be about.
Using the usual Helpful Yes/No, Report Abuse buttons. But, my preference would be not to restrict comments to only certain topics. I just threw it out there because I see so many reviews on steam not allowing comments so I assume people are worried about abuse. I agree it's not perfect.

What people are worried about, is getting attacked for expressing their opinions.
Which is exactly, what game reviews are: personal opinions in regard to a game.

And many people obviously have problems with letting opinions, that don't mirror their own, stand uncommented.

Years ago, you could directly answer to Amazon reviews, written by other customers.
Guess what?
The review section devolved into a cesspool filled with ridicule, (personal) insults and the reactions to both.

So, Amazon did the only correct thing: they disabled the possibility to directly answer to reviews.

Not that that keeps a-holes from addressing reviews they don't like, within their own reviews...but at least they have to write some review of their own now - instead of simply being able to attack others in the comment section under their reviews.

That is a HUGE improvement. I've always been afraid to leave a review because if I mess up or the game changes from a update, or if my opinion on the game changes as I play it, I'm stuck. So I end up putting off reviews forever and they just don't happen. Now I can feel free to post reviews of games I play alot or the ones I didn't like.
Cool, we can at least edit our reviews now.

FlockeSchnee: I write reviews in english, they used to automatically appear under the english tab. A few weeks ago the review I wrote in english appeared under the german tab and stayed there. I contacted support. They changed it to english and told me, the language selected for viewing gog determines under which language it appears. Of course, I don't know, if that has changed (again) with the review overhaul.
Sigh, that's a terrible approach. Adding a language selection box like Steam does wouldn't be any hard work. Thanks for your info.
Great update!
Thank you for this much-needed update! One thing I wish you guys could add though is a time tracker to show how long a verified customer has played the game in question when the game was being reviewed?
Giving credit when it's due. Good job, GOG team.

For everyone not using Galaxy, that'd be zero, regardless of how long they actually played, so it'll offer false information.

That'd be worthless. I'm using Lutris and even then that doesn't account for active time vs idle time or "oops, I left this running while out at supper" time.
Well this is obviously going to make a good number of folk happy.

But while I don't think things like reviews should be locked in concrete, this ability reduces credibility even more, so I don't personally agree with it.

For sure, you should have always been able to add to a review, but rewriting history is ridiculous.

Clearly at the time a review is made, that is how the reviewer feels, and it is relevant to that time. Changing your mind later about a review you made is of course relevant, but it shouldn't replace the original review.

When folk check a review, they want to get something from it, otherwise what's the point. And you can learn from reviews, even more so if someone changes their mind, but you won't necessarily know they changed their mind unless they say so.

Anyway none of that helps a person if they bought a game or didn't based on reviews, that days, weeks, months or years later get changed.

And let's be honest many, perhaps most reviews are some degree of useless, now more so.

The real problem, is folk doing reviews before they should.

And now that has been encouraged even more, because they can always change their mind and replace their original review.

The second problem, was not being able to add to a review.

This change will likely mean more reviews happen, with folk doing them sooner rather than later, which often gets forgotten, but they won't likely be worthwhile reviews, because they will be done too soon ... because they can always change it later.

So I'm left now with the sense that reviews just got more worthless, certainly for more recently added games at GOG.

Oh well, I try to not put too much stock in them anyway.

eiii: Hopefully the voting for reviews works more reliable too now.
Sadly the voting for reviews hasn't been fixed and still is broken. :(

When I vote for a review using the button below "Is this helpful to you?" the button gets colored and the vote counter increased by one. So far, so good. But when I reload the game page the counter is reset to the number before my vote. And even worse, the vote button still is colored, so I cannot try to vote again to actually get my vote counted.

I already have lost my ability to vote for several reviews that way, probably for much more than I think, before I realized that the mechanism is broken. Now I'm very hesitant to use the voting mechanism at all before it's fixed.

Edit: The vote actually might get counted. The counter changed after quite some time now (almost half an hour). But after such a long time you do not really know if it's your vote or if somebody else has voted.

Palestine: GOG, thank you for not only adding the ability to change the 'Is this helpful to you?' yes/no responses
I would like to have that ability too, as I've already pressed the wrong button a few times and could not fix that mistake. But when I try to change a vote for a review I only get a "You already voted" message and the vote stays as it is. Is there any trick to change it?
