Meteor shower. Stop. People are dying. Stop. Send help. Stop.

The 2001 first-person 3D shooter Venom. Codename: Outbreak, a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. spiritual predecessor by GSC Game World, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows.

You are sent to investigate the site of a meteor shower that left no survivors - after the scientists, followed by a military squad, disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Could it be aliens, or just a form of mass psychosis? That’s for you to find out.

In Venom. Codename: Outbreak your squad will be a very candid affair - just you and another soldier to watch your back. Fortunately, everyone on base is the best of the best and the AI of the game’s NPCs got many a word of praise, so you shouldn’t have to worry too much about them not doing their job. Should something start to go wrong, you can easily switch characters and take control of your partner - or play through the missions with a friend in 2-player LAN co-op mode. Sometimes, this will be one of the keys to getting through a mission alive.

Try to solve the mystery of the valley showered with meteors in Venom. Codename: Outbreak DRM-free at GOG.com - and most of all, try to get back alive.

What does the press say?

“Crawling across the forest floor to tag a one-shot kill on a guard whose head was barely visible in a tower at 186 meters is a thrill unlike any other.” -- GameSpy

“Outbreak seems almost surreally whimsical in its treatment of a special forces vs. alien conflict.” -- Game Over Online

“Codename: Outbreak is a fun game. Especially the later missions in the campaign which are particularly atmospheric and intense, requiring careful picking of character skills and meticulous execution of strategies.” -- Play.tm

apehater: according to the review here this game is total shit
More like those reviewers are total shit. :)

One of the best games for its time and still cool today. I still have a CD with it and its a pity it doesn't have a cd-key to be reclaimed. :(

HenitoKisou: According to review here some people had their ass kicked by squad-based gameplay wanting COD style and no, it wasn't shit when released, not even graphics. I still remember interview and premier gameplay from Game One channel. It's like Jagged Alliance in first person, you switch between teammates and improvise or arrange scenarios what happen where, never heard about AI because there is none, only orders/situation like like triggers. Enemy AI always played hostile, tried to surround you or avoided at best trying hide but always had 1 weak point in their behaviour pattern that you should learn to kill easilly.
is the game good compared to ghost recon, cause it sounds like a similar game?

They're similar, some of the missions reminded me of Rainbow Six actually.
Though Outbreak doesn't have the Tom Clancy vibe but a campy alien invasion plot instead.
I love the intro video shown on the game's page! The English version reminds me so much of the 80s and 90s "foreign" action movies set in the U.S. and made to mimic American action flicks. I want this just for the voice acting in the cut scenes!

Were the other releases (non-U.S.) of this game also set in Montana?
I'm actually disgusted.

Yeah, I can understand that. It was just a visual reaction ;)
And how to play it!? I bought it but game always crash after intro... Who knows how to fix?

I launched Config.exe, played a little with game settings, checked directX instalation by dxdiag.exe.... It is strange but now I can play in windowed mode or full screen with any settings )))
Magic Config.exe.

OldFagGamer: Magic Config.exe.
Thank you. But now have one new problem: i have in-game problem with FPS. On Intel HD Graphics 4400 i have terrible lags, on my gt 840M i have lags too and problems with the textures. Do you know something about it?

I've not tested game on Intel HD 3000, but on AMD Radeon HD 7470M all works good in general. I'm not sure about textures, it seems I have no problems with it. As for lags - really, time after time I have it, I've not investigated this situation yet, will try to play with another settings.

Finally this game is made by GSC. I had to increase windows virtual memory to 8Gb to have stable playing in Cossacks2. Maybe situation with lags is normal for Venom ))))))
This game absolutely hates modern hardware. I've original cds of the game and they work, but only if I turn down maximum RAM to 1GB-2GB in msconfig.exe. On WIndows 10, not so much.
It works great on old hardware though. I have this old computer at work, Windows 7, 2GB DDR RAM, Radeon 9200 GPU.
