“From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring [...]"
J.R.R. Tolkien

It's time to return to the epic fantasy world that already inspired feature films, a tv series, and quite a few great video games.

Middle-earth™: Shadow of Mordor™ - Game of the Year Edition takes you to the titular dark realm where you'll discover the origins of the Rings of Power, build your legend, and ultimately confront the evil of Sauron.
Genre: Action, Adventure
Discount: 75% off until 8th September 2022, 1 PM UTC.

Feel free to discover other games inspired by the works of famous fantasy writers, like A Game of Thrones: The Board Game or The Wheel of Time. For more GOGalicious deals on unforgettable title, check The GOG Sale that will last in our store until 5th September 2022, 10 PM UTC.
I guess we shouldn’t expect Dawn of War this week for fear of being... overshadowed.

I’ll see myself out.

Telika: This game is a good game.

(It's an absolutely shitty representation of Tolkien's poetic universe, as ever, but you can easily forget about the pretend link to the source material, and treat is as a truly excellent arkham-like brawler in a d&d-ish dark fantasy setting.)
That could be true, but I can't detach myself enough from Tolkien to enjoy this.
Now if you grew up only with the movies and Pop Culture it's probably a completely different story for people.
Sad to me but pretty normal.
Wow, not expected. Great addition!

Breja: I heartily recommend reading this article to any Tolkien fans considering a purchase.

TheCleaner517: That article is a dumpster fire of whining and unrealistic criticism. Bought the game already. If that article is your attempt to dissuade people from buying the game, then it falls flat.

Rings of Power is where you should dissuade people from watching. That show is a massive bastardization of the lore and a huge dumpster fire.
I'm not sure what wrong the show (which from all I've seen looks and sounds terrible and I don't intend to watch) could do that this game hasn't done already and what distinctions you see, but I don't really have any need to argue the point. I have no interest in dissuading anyone from doing anything, nor for that matter in ever again entering into any debates on this forum. I simply linked the article because it very well explains serious problems with the game as an adaptation of beloved source material, and I thought other Tolkien fans, uncertain of whether the game is for them, might find it a worthwile read to make an informed purchase.
I bought the game and the DLC, years ago on the other store.
I have yet to install it.
In fact I think I also have the game on PS3 or is it PS4?

If I had money, I would buy this one too.

No I don't know.

I am glad we see more DRM-free games here.

Now, how about Split/Second Velocity?

Thanks for the article. With this release and the Amazon TV show, it's not revenge porn, it's a complete gang bang :P

But as a tolkien fan, I will play it and watch the show, just to develop my own opinion !

I see that as the absolute opposite. A reason why this game feels so detached from Tolkien is because it borrows heavily from the movies' iconography (which was mostly praised by Tolkien fans, and actually generated a new wave of fandom), whereas I do not have this missing link (I have no interest in these movies, and only know them indirectly through the ubiquitousness of its images in pop culture). It's so immensely remote from my own representations, that the occasional word or name dropping doesn't bridge it in any way. It's two immensely different universes (and, a bit like Lovecraft but for opposite reasons, Tolkien isn't really "visualizable" for me, it's a literary universe full stop). They don't interact or bleed into each other at all.

Here it's just generic elves and orcs. We had these in Baldur's Gate and whatnot. At most, there's some "oh i see what you're trying to do there" roll of eyes with the cameo of a movie-inspired "gollum", but it's just a smirk and and side glance, and back to slashy slashy hacky hacky. No need to go all religious on that. Especially if you already don't particularly associate this movie character to the novel. In fact, every each Tolkien reference in that game feels exactly as if they had put a Gandalf cameo in Gobliiins or Eye of the Beholder. Like "yeah you're cute, it's a ref, got it, let's carry on". No big deal.

Heck, I used to enjoy a lot Manhattan Dealers. I didn't take very seriously the opening blurb that started with "You are the inspector Harry, and...".

Ancient-Red-Dragon: I'm glad this is here and with Achievements.

However, the price is way too high for a 2014 game. It should have at least a 50% launch discount.

Also, Shadow of War should be here too, and also with at least a 50% discount, given it's old age.
I agree with you for once. Maybe if this was Shadow of war, 20 would be more reasonable.

Edit: Never mind had no ideal SOW is still going for 50 bucks. Thought was cheap since i always see it on sale for like 10 bucks.

One of the things I liked the most in the movies was that the images I had created for years in my mind were recreated pretty well in the trikogy, some details aside.
Even more than the unfinished but very decent animated movie from the 1980 or so.

As you can see. Visions about Tolkien Orthodoxy can be different, at least aesthetically.

Yes, especially as Tolkien wasn't very descriptive, for some key elements (and rightly so, as Lovecraft destroys his own sense of wonder by being too concretely descriptive at times, and turning his "unnamables" into flying spaghettis - to which movies/games make no further favors of course).

But simply having human actors as elves kills the deal, for me. So, the orcs had little chance. Still, I suspect that if the movie's imagery had echoed my readings, I might have been more ill at ease with that game. Some narrative sense of uncanny valley, maybe.

You're lucky to have enjoyed the film (it's said to be a good film), I'm lucky to have enjoyed the game (it's a good game). We're lucky to have enjoyed the books (they're good books).
WTF????? I never saw this coming in a million years!!!!!!!!!!!!! I didn't even have the cash for it, but I bought it anyway. This game is one of the greatest games ever!!!!
