Return to the Mothership

<span class="bold">Homeworld Remastered Collection</span>, containing the legendary space RTSs turned instant classics, is now available, DRM-free on GOG.com with GOG Galaxy support for achievements and multiplayer, and a 50% launch discount.

Homeworld brought real-time strategy into actual 3D, creating a truly free-form tactical experience across battlefields vast in every dimension. It did so in a way that's not just manageable, but overwhelmingly fun! This engrossing space opera chronicles the struggles of an alien race, the Kushan, locked in a vicious conflict with a tyrannical empire as they make their way to the promised land.
Homeworld 2 expanded on the setting and story even further, while refining the overall gameplay and visual experience. Now the whole saga has been remastered, putting a fresh coat of paint and techno-magic over this timeless experience, so that new and veteran players alike can finally return safely to their true Homeworld. This version also includes the latest massive patch, which brings tons of radical changes to formations, ship behavior, gameplay balance, and more.

The Homeworld Remastered Collection includes both the classic and remastered editions of Homeworld & Homeworld 2.
Dedicated fans can also grab the remastered <span class="bold">soundtrack from both games</span>, available in MP3 and FLAC.

Engage in full-scale battle between vast 3D fleets in <span class="bold">Homeworld Remastered Collection</span>, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 50% discount will last until June 10, 12:59 PM UTC.

Fenixp: They actually fixed that with the 2.0 patch. Specifically, the issues with HW1 were that ships did not adhere to formations properly and projectile trajectories were not simulated - both were painstakingly coded into the HW2 engine and added for the original in order to address issues HW1 fans had with the remaster.
Do these changes apply to HW2R, and are the HW1R armor/health values tweaked to HW1 standards? Back when I tried playing HW1R, I noticed how delicate ships were when compared to the original game.

rampancy: In fact, I'd wager I'm probably the only person who'd be doing that...
avatar
Gydion: You would lose that bet. Looks like my GPU should just be able to run the remaster, but Homeworld classic will be the one I will play.

Promo for another 60 hours, good.
And that's one bet I'd gladly lose. I think I actually am going to go for this, even if I just play the classic editions; the promo price adds up to roughly $8.74 per game, which is roughly inline with the $9.99 (+ release discount) that GOG would have likely charged for each game if they were standalone releases.

cecil: Why no Mac Version?
avatar
Gydion: Aspyr?
Yeah, that's what I'm guessing. It's likely the same reason why we also haven't seen the Mac versions of KOTOR/KOTOR II and JKII/III on GOG.

If you're willing to put up with the "tolerable" DRM from Apple's Mac App Store, Aspyr is currently selling the Mac-native version of Homeworld Remastered (also including HW/HW2 Classic) for $19.99. Unfortunately the MAS version seems to have MP completely stripped out of the Remastered Edition (due to its reliance on Steam?), and it lacks the all-important recent 2.0 update.
As I understand the Homeworld Remastered games have both games with the updated UI from the second game, and is considerably better than it was originally. TB covered this a while back as I remember.

Hmmm I look forward to trying this out, if/when I can make myself play some of these games again. (Still haven't touched AI Wars... :( )

I'm pretty sure the formation mechanics also apply to HW2R, which ... Does change gameplay, yes, but formations in original Homeworld 2 were entirely useless outside of taking screenshots, so as far as I'm concerned, that's good.

As for HW1R balance, it's been tweaked, but ships still can't take a huge amount of pounding. Good news is that due to rebalance and functional formations, corvettes are useful again, as long as you don't use them to take on assault frigates.

It's definitely a different game from what HW1 used to be, which is to be expected of a remaster of this scale. On the other hand, I have tried playing classic primarily after buying it and I feel like remasters just play better, I like somewhat faster pace and especially HW1 really benefits from updates to its map... Scanne... Thing and larger draw distance.

In spite of what it looks like, Homeworld is not a 4X - it's a ... semi-traditional RTS game with a heavily story-based campaign with individual missions and stuff. Finishing both HW1 and 2 will take you about 30 hours or so.

Guys, just a quick heads up.For those of you who didn't know this is when you install the Homeworld Remastered Collection you can actually move the Homeworld 1 and 2 classic folders somewhere else and delete the prior.Saves a lot of space and is freakin cool.Thank you Gear Box :D.Cheers

Aside from the ultra delicate strikecraft, it was horrible for me to witness all of my ion beam frigates (at the cap limit) rushing a single heavy cruiser and being blown into atoms within about a minute. If I remember the original Homeworld correctly, those frigates should have managed to take down that kind of ship, with moderate losses after three or four minutes. Assuming no reinforcements came along to ruin my day.

If you reached the Garden of Kadesh missions, are the Kadeshi beam frigates working properly now? When I played HW1R, they weren't able to lock on and attack.

The best would be if one could choose at the beginning of the install what parts to install. (Just a hint to GOG.)
Hmm, I guess I should finally try them classics. I'm always for DRM-free goodies!
Excellent. The Homeworld series is on a list of classics I’ve never played, not counting their demos of course.

tburger: Excellent! Shame they haven't split it into Homeworld 1 and 2 but nevertheless - I'm gonna buy it.

EDIT: NO MANUALS?
Got that covered, all the originals are in a previous post I made, plus some bonus user stuff.
All gathered from various sites, and uploaded by me to my mega page.
PM if links broken.

Not GOG's call, Gearbox bundled the games in one package, and contrary to a previous post claiming Steam sell them separated, they don't.

I own both Steam and GOG versions, both have the Gearbox launcher.
Both have 3 individual games under the launcher;

Homeworld
Homeworld 2
Homeworld Remastered

This is v2.0 which claims to have fixed all the major issues fans had with using the second engine with both games., Formations being the main problem, the effort is substantial, results need time to be assessed.
Steam and GOG, got v2.0 the same day.

Homeworld Cataclysm, can't be released because the source code is lost, if it can be found, Gearbox can release both, classic and Remastered versions.

No technical reason exists why, they can't copy the original released disc.
Legally that would be piracy, they do not, and never will own the rights to that old release.
That right always remains, with the original Publisher and/or dev. Stupid I know, but it's the law, and laws are often stupid. No law against making stupid laws, that would not be stupid, and politicians would have to be intelligent. All of them.

So without the source code to compile a new release, it's never going to happen, the source code could be out there somewhere, but no guarantees of it being found, if it still exists.
Cool release, .... Another cool thing would be playing Borderlands 1 on Galaxy :)

I have nothing against bundling the games in one package and selling them together but I would prefer the installer to be split or at least give me the option to select what is installed at the beginning of the install. (Just a hint to Gearbox then.)
