I keep on falling...

Downwell, a downwards journey through a bottomless well full of pixel-starved creatures and untold treasures, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% launch discount.

How low will you go for a handful of shiny red gems? Driven by an overpowering desire to collect them all, our peculiar protagonist just keeps falling down the well in an unstoppable, frenetic descent. At least he's got his nifty Gunboots on, so he can blast all the nasty well-dwellers to oblivion, collect tons of upgrades, and temporarily resist the unforgiving law of gravity. Surprisingly, he's not the only civilized person here and every now and then he'll find himself in safe areas of the procedurally-generated caverns where he can level up, shop, or just ponder on his life decisions. Could it be that he's actually drawn to the well's impenetrable darkness or is he just looking for a way to battle it? Well, regardless, there's only one way to go from here..

Strap your Gunboots on and let yourself fall Downwell, DRM-free on GOG.com.
The 50% discount will last until December 11, 10:59 PM UTC.

amrit9037: So please release Cave Story+ soon.
Pretty please.

op2play: Does it really have permadeath?
yes for what I have played there no way to restart from higher levels or keep items. But levels are randomly generated and so are the items,
Maybe there's some cheat or way to save. It's quite the hardcore game. I wonder how many levels are there and if can be beaten.

Maxvorstadt: This is a C-64 port, right?

Fairfox: I'd sooo <3 seeing act. C64 titles here. Like bundles! Thalamus, Ocean, Codemasters, System 3, etc.

<3 <3 <3
Spectrum > C64 for games.

Are people really complaining about the price?
It's 99p for christs sake!

amok: Nerd³ liked it a bit, gameplay and commentary for those interested - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rh4dpO6Sg64
I was about to write, that a game looking so low-tech must be very good to have a rightful place in GOG's catalogue. I'm not a big fan of shovel ware, there are other places for these. But, after watching the Nerd³ Let's Play, I have to say this game does have something to it. It's not a blast, but strangely intriguing. Might get it, in spite of my first impression.
Thanks for posting the link!

Like others have mentioned already: I ain't got the reflexes for such. I'm getting old in my (relatively) young age.

For me it costs 1.39 EUR (the beauty of the regional pricing).
Anyway, it looks quite OK, but because of the permadeth nature I will wishlist it for now.

htown1980: It makes me sad that I know I am too old and slow and lacking in reflexes and coordination for a game such as this.
Exactly what I was thinking while watching the video.

Fairfox: See, this is totes tru, buuut if teh whole game is about rushing evah downwards 'n' you has to slow it down from start to finish, is it even worth playin'? Likeee... if it was a part of teh game only, then I could see it. But teh whole thing makes it moar dubious, Imma reckoning. Whatevs, tho; peeps might still enjoy it even so, 'n' I guesses teh customization (to a degree) with abilities might carry it thru for 'em.
Well he can slow it 50% when game gets tricky.
I usually use Auto Hot Key to adjust game speed.
It will be like SuperHOT... oh wait!!!

Tyrrhia: Edit. Had said "sequel" instead of "prequel."...
... but actually meant "predecessor", right? ;-)

pre-reboot
Sweet, not today but I'm going to double dip this one, Downwell is great! :)

Well, I know a prequel is technically like a flashback (i.e. something that comes after but tells things that happened before), but it makes so much sense to use it. Also, I didn't know what to replace it with until now. So, thanks! I'll use that from now on.

*grumbles* Stupid language. :P
It's about time...

hyperagathon: Do want, but typical for a Japanese game, no Linux. Anyone play the Android version? Is it playable on a phone?
not played but in the review I posted it says that you tap the screen (no gravity sensor). I don't know if you can use a game pad.
PRO: the screen is vertical so no blank area at the sides (as in Windows unless you have a rotating monitor).
CONTRO:probably less precise because of smaller screen and controls, covering the screen with fingers, no DRM free that I know. I'm happy with the Win version...if it really gets me, when I find myself with Linux only again I might get it for Android IF it's DRM free. Many ifs. It's so cheap and fun anyway.
It's gotten very good reviews, so I'm glad to see it here. Speaking only for myself, the little I played of it (on the Vita) got old fast, but that's really just personal preference; I prefer my games to have a beginning, middle, and end, as opposed to something that you constantly replay.

I will say that in actual practice, I thought the graphics worked fine for the way the game is designed. You're constantly moving and the screen is filling up with enemies; the simple graphics work well in the context of a game where you can never really pause to take them in.
