k heres my question. got heck of a virus on my pc and I had to reinstall windows. installed gog and 1 of my games so far (witcher 3). tried playing the game and none of my saved game files are there.

does not gog also save the saved games files like steam does?

I invested 229 hours playing game so far and no way wanna start all over again. was exploring everything, all the quests, all the ? marks on the maps, etc etc

No, gog don't have any save cloud feature at the moment like steam. It will probably be added in the future but that won't help you much now.
Well gog does not have any cloud saving. So all games have the save files on your computer. Meaning that they all got overwritten/deleted when you re-installed Windows.
well thanx for the info. wont be playing it anymore.didnt do the 2 expansions. that's what I get for not reading up before I bought witcher 3 on gog. should have stayed with steam sigh!!!! least I only have 2 games I bought here
Steam spoiled users so much that they forgot even the basic rules of computers -_-
Btw, I'd give a try with Recuva (or similar) anyway.

There's a way to get.an appropriately leveled character, you can jump right into the expansions that way.

To be fair even Uplay and Origin have cloudsaves. :p
I mostly don't bother backing up saves either anymore.

Indeed, when we ask what Steam has done for us, we can say they turned PC users into Console players.

Isn't there some script or something community made to keep a copy of the saves from games in the cloud?
I don't seem to find it now though, I think I saw something in the forum - worth finding and adding to galaxy beta thread highlights.

xshaopx:
As mentioned earlier, it IS WORTH trying to install Recuva or other to try and recover your old saves,
unless you formatted* your HD while reinstalling Windows, it might very possible to bring them back.
Other then that, you should try and ask for some saves (editor) from the community that you can load and get your progress back

* Some software / methods are even able to recover data from formatted HD, but the chances to get saves that way are much more slim.
It's a real bummer to hear you played the game and put a lot of hours in and lost your save games. I had that happen to me with Far Cry a couple of times but not from a reinstall, but rather my own error. I've restarted it a few times now and at some point I am determined to plough through the whole game as it is amazing.

I've completed The Witcher 3 about 1.5 months after it came out, playing it pretty much every day and it was the most amazing game I've ever played. I know it's frustrating to lose your save games like that, but trust me... after you've had some time to shake off the negative feelings about the situation, at some point in time I highly recommend starting the game over from the beginning. They've changed a lot of things and greatly improved the game, the user interface, better organization, new features etc. and of course there is the two new expansion packs also.

If you do start a new game as I suggest, be sure to make backup copies of your saves, or use one of those programs that lets you automatically back up files to a cloud storage site like Google Drive or whatever. I haven't used such software but some people swear by it.

I too am one of the people who appreciate games with optional cloud storage support for save games, characters, configuration etc. It can be really useful for times like losing a hard disk completely, needing to reformat, sharing between multiple computers/laptops/etc. and other uses as well. I'm sure that GOG will add optional cloud storage to Galaxy at some point in time because it is incredibly useful to those who need or want it.

Witcher 3 is worth playing a dozen times though for sure - amazing game start to finish.

I once worked for a guy thst was quite proud of nightly backups to the same rewritable dvd several years solid. Thanks to his paranoia that opening the drive might somehow break his perfect setup, I can only assume the existence of the dvd itself.

All backup systems have the same fundamental flaw: ignorance.
