I'll go through a few examples in various genres, since I'm not sure what exactly You're looking for.
Bard's Tale is a great and very funny action RPG, a parody of the usual "chosen one saves the realm". The gameplay is very streamlined, but in this case it serves the game well. Great songs too. Beer, beer, beer...
Torchlight is great if you want a classic hack'n'slash in a modern package.
Expeditions Conquistador and Battle World Kronos are very good turn based strategies. They are both light on story, especially the latter, but have great gameplay. Expeditions has a certain RPG-party managemen aspect to it, Kronos is a straight up strategy game, with easy, clear rules, but is quite deep and demanding.
Rogue Legacy is a phenomenal platformer-roguelike hybrid. Very addicting. Orignal idea, great fun, and almost infinite replay value.
Unmechanical is a very well designed puzzle game. Really no story to this one at all, but it has nice graphics and good puzzles.
Deponia is a good classic point&click adventure game, funny and pretty. If you want something more serious, there is also Chains of Satinav from the same developer, a wonderful fantasy fable. It's set in the universe of the Dark Eye RPG's, but it does not really come with any lore, it's totally self contained.
