The requested game kinda sounds like a mix of Space Rangers and SPAZ, though that combo would still be missing the more nuanced tactical elements.

InkPanther: Yes, absolutely, the game has an active pause.
Good to know. :)

NoNewTaleToTell: Salvation Prophecy
Honestly? It looks like a nice concept (M&B on space) but terrible execution, looks clunky and for what i've been reading, too simplistic and repetitive.

Yeah, i have Space Rangers HD on my backlog because i saw people recommending it but i never tried it or really paid too much attention. As for SPAZ, meh, i was enjoying it but after a few hours it becomes repetitive and annoying, too much gridding and i don't have any real motivation to keep playing since the story is terrible.
Sounds to me like EV Nova would be right up your alley. :-)

Uhm, kind of but considering that i already have SPAZ and Space Rangers HD and they're similar to that one not sure if it would be worth it, especially considering that it costs 30$!

It can be simplistic in some ways and at times it is a little repetitive (mostly near the end game), however I wouldn't say it has terrible execution or that it's noticeably clunky, I got around fifteen hours (guesstimating) of enjoyment out of it. It's a pretty great game, especially considering it was made more or less by one person. I'll also point out that I didn't encounter a single bug or crash in Salvation Prophecy.
You might want to try X-Com Interceptor, by no means the best game in the series, I do remember I had fun playing it.
Gameplay is a Wing Commander style spacecombat simulator with the X-Com style basemanagement with an overarching story.

Thinking about it Wing Commander Armada might apply as wel, though I still need to play that game.
Did you have a look at Starpoint Gemini 2?

It seems like a Freelancer/Elite type game, you manage only one ship, but it focus more on ships where you have a crew like big battleships, the fighting is more action with some tactical decisions you have to make. At the moment I do not know how far the crew management role plays a part in fighting.

But my first few steps, ship handling is a bit complex and something to get used to, is quite good.

Don't get me wrong, i can see someone really enjoying a game even with flaws but i'm counting in more reviews/opinions beside yours and for what i've seen in videos.

Not really what i'm looking for now and to be honest i can't play those old 3D games, i don't know why but they give me motion sickness, the same for fps like Duke Nukem 3D or Alien Trilogy (and these were games that i've played when i was younger).

Yeah, i have it on my wishlist since it was release here on gog since it reminds me of Freelancer but i'll wait for a promo on that,

Cyraxpt: Uhm, i'll bite the next time that appears on sale (probably tomorrow).
Eh, i didn't had to wait too much after, it's already on sale. Bought! :)

Ya. Ambrosia SW was around waaay before steam and haven't change the prices accordingly. It is "shareware" so you can download the game and progress to a certain point and then it won't let you go any further until you pay. I've sunk a lot of hours into that game lol. You can try it out and see what you think!
Bumping this thread because i saw this on Steam new releases (Early Acess though)

Space Rogue

A bit expensive for what i'm used to but it does look like what i was looking for (manage a ship/crew, roguelike elements, combat, etc), hope that it gets a release here (along Cosmonautica).

If you have an iPad or Android device, try Imperium Galactica II.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.digitalreality.ig2
(PC is old, not sure if it runs) http://www.amazon.com/Imperium-Galactica-2-Alliances-PC/dp/B00002SUR0
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/imperium-galactica-2/id510652364

You do have a fleet, though.

You design your own ships, real-time battles in space and land, you choose what you want to do during events like FTL -- it's pretty good. But not quite what you're looking for yet.

Your linked game here looks very interesting. I'll have to keep my eye on it. Thanks for sharing!
The problem is that it looks a bit complex and i'm stupid! :p

I was enjoying Nexus the Jupiter Incident until i got to the part where there's sub systems on the ship and i have to read the manual, unfortunately my attention spawn is too short and i lose my interest when that happens.

Imperium was pretty easy to get into. It's been maybe 14 years or so since I last played, but I think it had many difficulty settings so that even if you sucked, you could do it.

Nonetheless, it's an old game that was far from perfect, now just what you're looking for.

Have you ever played Artemis? I haven't yet, but I've heard it's something special.
I would buy champagne if Imperium Galactica II ever comes to gog. Well, not exactly, I think champagne is horribly overrated. I'll probably buy some fancy brand of coffee or something to celebrate.
Has anyone played the alpha build of Starsector yet?

Looks very promising: http://fractalsoftworks.com/

Escape Velocity Nova has already been mentioned but please vote for it, still has less than 300 votes and I'd like to see it here so that it can eventually go on sale and be affordable, no way I'm paying $30 for that game:
