Alright, so.. is the Masterpiece Edition objectively better? That seems to be the reasoning for why they are removing Real Myst.
avatar
Thiev: Not really, it will be updated for Win10 Soon™.
avatar
thomq: Er, but Real Myst is being removed on June 18th from this store, according this very thread. O_o

And "Real Myst" (not Masterpiece Edition) isn't listed amongst the seven games that are being updated for the 25th anniversary. Just the Real Myst Masterpiece Edition.
Perhaps GOG are planning to work their own magic on the game (rather than rely on that of the developer), as they have on so many other games that have had extreme troubles running on modern versions of Windows?
avatar
Fender_178: Also with the newly successful Kickstarter the Myst series is going to be re-released as a remasters for it's 25th anniversary.
avatar
Crosmando: Really? I thought they were just going to be updated so they work perfectly on modern systems, "remaster" implies something else entirely.
That's not true. They won't be remaster. They are just the game thar are actually relesed here, run by wrappers or interpreters, plus the one that are not available here also made run in some way. No upgrade of any kind is planned.

Linko90: Cyan Worlds feel Real Myst does not accurately represent the vision of the game
From the store page: "This is how the creators of this game wanted it to look like from the very beginning!"

C'mon.

It's funny because the original pre-rendered Myst actually looks better than the medicore 3D graphics of RM.

I for one will only accept real time ray tracing for Real Myst.

Cyan and GOG are working on the titles together. But most of they'll do is something that eveyone could do. Just run them with interpreter (ScummVM and Residual VM, which also are working together with Cyan) or wrappers (for Mac). I don't know what they'll do for the missing games but it would probably mostly the same approach. No magic, no effort, no improvements.

As stated above and on the campaign, two version of the first Myst are provided. Myst Masterpiece Edition and Real Myst Mastepiece Edition. The original Myst and the first Real Myst are not considered. Unfortunately Myst Masterpiece Edition is only available in English while the original was localized in many languages.

About removing the game, both GOG and the developer have to understand that preservation is something some users seek, so it would be wise to keep those game available, even as an extra. They could easly have the two masterpiece edition with their own original version as an extra.

This! I would be especially happy if the original Myst was added to ME as well.

It is a disturbing trend.

Too many of these "Enhanced", "Masterpiece" or "HD" editions lose features of the original. Be it HoMM3 losing it's expansion, or as mentioned above Real Myst with fewer language options. Not to mention how the new and supposedly improved version now sells as a new game at new game prices and sell at double if not quintuple the price of the original on sale.

For example:
Real Myst (base price) - $5.99
Real Myst Masterpiece Edition (base price) - $17.99 [200% price increase]

Real Myst (best bundled price) - $1.19
Real Myst Masterpiece Edition (best bundled price) - $4.49 [277% price increase]

Real Myst (best single price) - $1.49
Real Myst Masterpiece Edition (best single price) - $5.39 [262% price increase]

Real Myst (this sale) - $1.79
Real Myst Masterpiece Edition (this sale) - $5.39 [201% price increase]

Makes one wonder if it's really about the inferiority of the original version but rather just increased profits.
Purchased.
The new version will probably cause problems with my hardware and not sure is able to work under Linux.
What about original Myst, without alterations, remastering, or "improvements" (such as 360 degrees movement)?
I seem to recall it was available on Gog at some point before,
is it available atm as an extra download on any of the current versions available to purchase on Gog?

Oh, yeah, that sweet HyperCard action, before they rewrote it in C in order to port it to Windows. I, too, would like that.

Or even just the original Windows version (which works in ScummVM and is nearly identical to the hypercard version). ME contains some weird bugs in the Mechanical Age fortress rotation. It can still be done with some trial and error but it doesn't behave consistently like in the original Windows version.

Which btw. could also be avoided since there is at least a German version of Myst Masterpiece Edition available (I just installed it to check) - just not here.

Mentioning HyperCard was mostly me being sarcastic, since GOG would never bother releasing binaries for classic Macintosh System/Mac OS, or even Mac OS X/PowerPC as they don't cater to legacy systems at all. I don't even know which language was used for the original port to Windows, C was purely a guess.

Have you contacted GOG about that, they might want the files.
