A game of pawns.

Phantom Doctrine is now available for pre-order, 10% off until August 28th.
Owners of Hard West on GOG.COM get an additional 5% discount.
Buy the game before August 28th and get the game's artbook and soundtrack for FREE!

Heads up, operatives! Prepare yourselves for a turn-based conspiracy thriller set during an alternate history Cold War and prepare well - every piece of information can make a difference. Working unseen, you must organize, recruit, deceive and infiltrate, leading The Cabal against the dark forces who are plotting to control the world. When the bullets start flying, remember to keep to the shadows and leave no witnesses.
Wishlisted, easily.

The tactical gameplay will probably be OK. Now, what I am really waiting to see is the strategic layer. That is what can make or break this game for this player.

Zoidberg: Intriguing, but not gonna buy a cat in a bag.

Lone_Scout: And a cat in a box?
Probably a bad translation of an idiomatic expression from french. :P

It means buying something you don't know the nature of.
oh wow. saw the customization animated pic. ( items.gog.com/phantom_doctrine/Customization.gif ) amazing diversity - loving it. but the question is, can i be black and kgb, or is some factual reality kept? actually, truth be told i'll play as a female anyway so it won't matter. see you boys on the battlefield. xoxo

English version is 'a pig in a poke'.

On a side note, I have to say, IMO, this is pre-order bonuses done right. Some decent extras, but not in-game content. I may have to grab this, even though I tend to avid pre-orders.

Probably British originally? I've been familiar with the phrase since childhood, and I grew up here in Canada. So I assume it's relatively well known in North America as well.

Interesting, but it sounds more like modern history than scifi. Well it does not sound like scifi at all.
Ah. Didn't realise it was from the Hard West people.

It won't go unbought, then.

You preorder a game then you open the box and you either get the game you were epxpecting... or you don't! :D

But you have to open the box to be sure! :D

Well, the announcement post does say 'alternate history' so that's maybe where the sci-fi element comes in.

In English, we say you shouldn't buy a pig in a poke, but if someone "lets the cat out of the bag", they've disclosed a secret or exposed a deception, which seems to have originated from the same practice:

Last year while vacationing, I bought a couple pieces of fudge, which was then put in a small box for me to carry. This was in a gift shop at an aquarium and my wife was looking at something else at the time, so didn't realize I'd bought it. When we left the shop my wife noticed the box and asked what was in it. Trying to be clever and cryptic, I said "Well, there may or may not be some fudge in there...". My youngest daughter immediately quipped "Ah, Schrodinger's fudge!"
