but is it worth it ?
according to this article : http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/02/pono-player-review-a-tall-refreshing-drink-of-snake-oil/1/
not really
though i rather like the tone and opener of the article

and personally i would prefer the fio X1 which is just one fourth of the price tag
the pono does have a unusual triangular shape whcih makes it rather stand out
as well as the yellow which doesnt really do much for me but it makes it stand out

its biggest problem ( for me ) ..other then the price tag is the lack of a haware hold button
which makes its useless as a portable player

and now im waiting for tinyP to make a joke about the name
come on i know it will happen ! ;p
I saw the words "toblerone", "porno" and then that you'd written the thread. disappointed!

you got a weird post history! O_____o7
I've asked this elsewhere, so I figure maybe this is a good a place as any- anyone have recommendations for a music player (dunno what the actual term for it would be-mp3 player that plays flacs and other formats?) that has reasonably good quality audio output and hopefully support for changeable space (a card slot or usb jack or something). Something where the expense (if there has to be some) isn't from having the brand name of Apple, but rather the hardware?

Not sure about the sound quality bit, but this should meet all criteria you mentioned::

http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Sansa-Clip-Player-Black/dp/B002MAPT7U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422914456&sr=8-1&keywords=mp3+player&pebp=1422914458197&peasin=B002MAPT7U
And also doesn't seem to require proprietary software to load in music (what I forgot to mention, although there are workarounds for iPods and such as well). And barely $40 too :D.
Doesn't really seem to hold up in the sound quality department, though :(...

Well Fiio X1 was namedropped in the OP & USB & microSD slots are pretty much standard on these media players they just take the really small usb type so something like this can be handy
The article says it came pre-loaded with only one song - he doesn't mention which song, so I'm guessing it's this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ovum-GjYWKQ

If you don't feel like clicking I'll tell you it's Piece Of Crap off Sleeps With Angels.

I don't know what else to say other than I'm surprised to see it's running Android 2.3

I guess if you really like yellow and making the Pono puns that tinyE refuses to make which is a bit rude then this note's for you.

MP3 player thread

akhliber recommended the FiiO's audio players if sound quality is important. I've been eyeing the FiiO X1 myself.

im quite dissapointed that tinyP was a no show

the pono hits a few right notes
expendable
interesting design
....yellow ...well its unusual

but the price tag and no hold or lock button just dont agree with me
i'd be better off with the fiio X1

APE, FLAC, ALAC, WMA, WAV as lossless and MP3, AAC, OGG and VORBIS. It seems to have no internal memory but that seems very strange to me. It at least support for expandable memory card up to 128GB.

Rest of the specs

It's rather annoying. According to their site they have 2 resellers in Sweden. One doesn't have a website (it had a shady name too haha) and one I e-mailed who said they didn't order in single units from FiiO. I could order from eBay which I'll end up doing but it's so annoying having to deal with customer service in case something goes wrong in case I have to ship it outside the country.

The target audience for this are the people that are in the Hi-Fi scene ($10,000+ per speaker). Before this they didn't have a good player that could conveniently playback the digital studio masters.

i kinda doubt that a the 10 grand per speaker crows will even want to bother with this type of thing
its either a full stereo set or a vacuum amps with vinyl

i am aware fo the specs but i'd rather hear about it from somebody who has actually used it
im used ( and locked in ) to the apple hard and software
but im getting rather tired of the lack of storage options especially since the ipod classic was taken out
