Although the question is probably related to PC games, I would recommend Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island. It's not only one of the greatest platformers of all time, but also the boss fights are really cool and as original as they can be. Rather on the easy side, but every one of them requires a different technique to beat and it's hard not to get a smile on one's face while fighting them.

omega64: You'll have my respect if you beat it without help. Can't even imagine. xD

Ghorpm: Then I would like some of your respect too! :) I did finish La-Mulana without walkthrough nor any hint whatsover. I must admit, I solved a puzzle or two just by a pure luck but during the game I usually knew what and why I was doing. The key was to realize that the puzzles were not actually cryptic. They were trolling you all the time! After that I had a feeling that the most absurd idea was probably a solution and after half a year (I made long breaks because I didn't want to be frustrated) I finished the game :D one of my best achievements in gaming
Quite impressive. ^_^
Guessing you didn't get the... secret outfit?

Oh right, platformers with boss fights...
Super Meat Boy
Psychonauts

Thanks a lot for your suggestions everyone! feel free to keep 'em coming.

I've already got Psychonauts and Rayman Origins in my library so I'll start with those :-)
I've got a SNES too, so I'll see if I can find Super Mario World 2. Any more SNES suggestions are also welcome.

Also seems I need to get my hands on a NES-emulator :-D

And yes, I'm starting to becoming more aware of the puzzle aspects in La Mulana :-D Trying to figure out how to give three lights to the heavens, or whatever. Still, looks interesting :-)

Would recommend picking up Legends eventually, sadly locked to Uplay but much better than Origins. Even has most of the Origins levels in it.
Just FYI the end of Psychonauts is frustratingly hard.

Whoa.

I tried to complete it without hints and I'm now stuck at the final battle. I did have to reference a walkthrough a couple of times when my hypotheses turned out to be really damn hard to implement (e.g. jars in Gate of Illusion - this is what stops me from having another go at the game), just to see if I should keep trying or give up.

There is a place in Hell for La-Mulanites. The path begins within the choked mouth of Guidance Gate. Do not search the belly, only the dead would greet you.

Alternatively: Spoilers

There's a very very hard area in the game that gives you a reward you'll wish you could disable. ;)

grimgroove: Hello,

Could you guys give me some recommendations for platformer games with great bosses?
I've found La Mulana which is looking great. I was looking for others on GOG but most platformers seem to emphasize puzzles instead of bossfights.
Any recommendations would be appreciated!
Spelunky has some really hard boss fights.

See that? I can't let a mere physicist's brain beat the might of The Puzzlemaster!
AND I'll get that secret outfit!

Thanks for the link. That game is hilarious. Best ending song in a flash game.

It's not a game with a free song. It's a song with a free game.

I remember that being the highest-rated game on Kongregate for some time. Probably still is.

Hahahaha, was about to post just the same as you! Epic (and catchy) ending song indeed. :D

We're happy you made it,
but how are you gonna spend the rest of this da-ay?"

Epic indeed! Couldn't finish this without a walkthrough though, pretty tough stuff.

What do you mean by great and original? Pretty much all popular old platformer series (like Sonic the Hedgehog, Donky Kong Country, Earthworm Jim, etc) had some bosses that couldn't be taken heads on and required special tactics and skills.
