how do you even get a negative rep?

When you hover over a post made by someone else, in the right hand corner, a "Rate this post" appears with a plus (+) and minus (-) sign.
Enough people negatively rate your posts and your rep goes into the negative.
Conversely, enough people rate your posts positively, and your rep increases.

You can get a negative rep if you are perceived to be someone who only comes onto the forums to ask for games and give nothing back in return.
Or if you're just generally obnoxious or a troll. :P
