dtgreene: It's good to see "Machine Code for Beginners" available for free. Maybe I'll fire up an emulator and play around with it to get a feel for ancient assembly language.

(Are Z80 or 6502 CPUs in use today, possibly on embedded systems? I know some graphing calculators used Z80 CPUs.)
Well, if you really want it, I can probably get you a copy of my husband's senior thesis on 6502 assembly language.

(Edit for error.)

Thank you for sharing, this looks like something fun for the non-coder person that I am. :-)
These are very sophisticated for children’s books. Why did I never have something like this as a kid? I could have become a programmer FFS!
After all these years... and now I finally understand the differences between PEEK and POKE. My life is fulfilled.
Here's the direct link if you don't like kotku.

Klumpen0815: You could code in an emulator.
Yeeeeees, I know... but an emulator can't shoot overly-energetic electrons at your retina like those CRT screens of old. Man, those things were like the centrifugal governors on steam engines: if you stayed in front of one for too long your eyes and head started to hurt, so you had to reduce your exposure.

Ok, I guess I miss those times more than the hardware of those times. I still remember playing Turrican on my living room TV and thinking it was the coolest thing ever.

I still wonder if the loading screens included hidden commands that were inserted directly into the brain or if they were just supposed to cause as many epileptic seizures as possible.
Some of the C64 games had interesting loading stuff like these ones.

Others had mini games you could play while waiting.Bizarrely Namco acquired a patent for the idea years later despite the idea being done years earlier.

That's cool, thank you, especially the adventure and fantasy games. :)

I miss the installation of the original Broken Sword, the new version is lacking it.
