liquidsnakehpks: I have got a new 3ds xl and its good for games that support it , i always have that slider fully turned on but not many games uses it.If you want better portability , i would go for the new 2ds xl , smaller and proper clam shell

SirPrimalform: Really? Every single 3DS game I own supports 3D in some way, can you name some of the ones that don't?
All of the VC titles ,
Ultimate NES remix
Retro City Rampage
Harvest Moon Lost Valley
Pikmin
Dragon Quest 8
Lady Layton, Zero Time Dilemma,
Super Mario Maker
Final Fantasy Explorers,
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga DX
Binding of Isaac
OlliOlli
Mighty Gunvolt Burst
Terraria
The pokemon games have 3d only in few spots
7th Dragon
Dragonball Fusions
Hyrule Warriors
One Piece Unlimited World Red.

There is a lot more but these are the ones i played and remembered

The best use i found was in sega classics 3d and 3d classics of nes and there were some lovely 3d trailer videos in the eshop
The New 3DS has better 3D than the older versions, but it will still depend on you - a friend of mine gets an instant headache from it, for example. Even if you don't, you may, like me, find it doesn't really contribute much and turn it off. Knowing this, would I go for the N2DS? Eh, probably not. I like having the option for situations where it might help a game pop a little, plus the N2DS has inferior sound (mono and poor placement).

SirPrimalform: The New 2DS is clamshell, you're thinking of the (old) 2DS.
Ah, well I'd probably just go for the 2DS then, assuming the new 2DS can play new 3DS exclusive games like Xenoblade Chronicles (I know there aren't that many but it's worth it alone for Xenoblade Chronicles in my opinion).
avatar
Darvond: I mean, I'd personally save up for a switch since the 3DS line is EOL and unergonomic as all getout.

I found the 3D to be largely a gimmick and many of the games in the later library don't even use it either. I can only think of one game that made thoughtful use of it.
I love the Switch, but I'd have to disagree.
Particularly if the OP has never had any version of the original DS either (not sure if that's the case or not) because between the original DS and the 3DS you have access to one of the best gaming libraries on any console.
And even with Nintendo's penchant for rereleased there isn't an awful lot of overlap between the two.

The New 2ds is an XL, so is the same screen size as the New 3ds XL. The sound is stereo too, but the speakers placement is right where your palms go, so you could mufle it a little. Also, is slightly higher volume but with slightly less clarity. I prefer the design of the 3ds with the speakers on the side of the screen, but the New 2ds is matte instead of glossy in the exterior (hate glossy). Also to consider, the 2ds XL is like 150g lighter, so think about it for the health of your wrists. Oh, and the stylus in the New 2ds is just a joke, too damn short haha

Other than that, they play the same games (including Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, and every "New" exclusive like SNES Virtual Console) and have a decent battery life.
Wow, I seem to have nearly picked my way around the games on that list somehow.

Most of your post is fine, but the VC is a given because they're not 3DS games. :P

liquidsnakehpks: Hyrule Warriors
I was about to call bollocks on this, but a quick google tells me apparently it doesn't support 3D on a first gen 3DS because it's not powerful enough, I assume that's what you played it on. I would argue it doesn't count on that list because this is basically a New 3DS exclusive game that they managed to get to work in a halfarsed way on an Old 3DS.

Also worth noting that there are quite a lot of ports on that list.

I'm currently part way through Xeno 3D on my N3DS, it passed me by on the Wii. I'm really enjoying it but I have a compulsion to do sidequests that's preventing me from progressing the story. :P

Yeah, the 3DS has an incredibly rich library even without including all the DS games it can play. By comparison the Switch is still a little lean.

Ah, I didn't realise that. I'll edit my previous advice.

I was wondering about this myself and was decided on the 3DS XL since I like more options and I doubt the 3D would bother me that much plus now that I think about the sound which is really important to me, I much rather prefer stereo, that is my minimum requirement for anything even remotely sound related so the 3DS XL is the one I'm going with. Now it is definitely confirmed that I'm going to get this now that I have the information about the sound. XL because I like big screens. I like the portability of it compared to the PSP and the PS Vita because their screens are more exposed without cases.

Thank you for asking this question as I am interested in thoughts on the 3DS as well.

It's one of my favourite games of all time, I absolutely loved it.
I wouldn't particularly recommend Xeno X on Wii U (it's like an MMORPG without the multiplayer. Beautiful world but a bit boring story and quests wise) but Xeno 2 on Switch is also excellent (though not quite as good).

I'm always side tracked by side quests though, progressing the story tends to be an after thought... I put about 120 hours into it I think before I was done (and even then there was still a little bit more I could do, optional bosses etc.)
I've been meaning to replay it for years, and would have by now if I could play it in Wii mode on the Wii U and use the game pad... but the extra step of finding the Wii remotes and getting batteries for them for some reason is enough to put me off doing so (and I'm not going to rebuy the Wii U eShop version just for that convenience)

Where are you up to?

The 2ds is mono, but the New 2ds XL is stereo. Just remember the speakers are located in a "not so suitable" place. The New 2ds XL is basically a New 3ds XL without 3d, a worse speaker location, a smaller stylus, and a better price because of those annoyances (and lighter, and less pron to fingerprints... oh, and you don't have to open the battery cover to change the SD card since it's located right next to the gamecard slot now).

If you want the best sound possible out of ANY 3ds models, then your only options is using headphones though, other than that, New 3ds XL has the slightly better speakers and better location.

I heard Xeno X was extremely different. I've actually already bought 2 for the Switch, but I wanted to finish 1 first even though I understand they're unrelated storywise.

I think I may have passed 120 hours already, but then I'm an extremely inefficient player. :P

The eshop downloadable version of Xenoblade 1 does support the gamepad, but I'm wouldn't expect you to buy it again of course. On a completely unrelated note, the Wii U is extremely easy to hack. *cough*

In terms of story, the whole Prison Island thing (avoiding spoilers) was the last real story event I played. I noticed that pretty much every Alcamoth quest has an ominous timer on it, so I decided to try and do them all before going any further for fear of missing them.

It is, combat is similar but you make your own character and have changeable classes (and a wide range of companions). It's not awful, but really no where near as good as the others.
They are mostly unrelated, but there is a kind of nod that ties the two together, but you'd only really notice it if you played and finished both games.

100 hours is about the most I would spend in most games before I start to get a little bored and finish it off.

Interesting... I will have to look into that then ;)

Yeah, there are a few quests that need to be completed before a certain point in the story, thankfully it does mark all of these. I think you're a little way off the point of no return, but I wouldn't quote myself on that.

1. That's enough for me to want to play them in order. Even X, if just for the lovely landscapes.

2. My mistake, I'm on 85 hours at the moment, but looking at a save made at the last big plot point shows 65 hours so I've just put in 20 hours on sidequests over the last few months...

3. There's a fairly decent retroarch port that's worth checking out.

4. I'll leave nothing to chance then!

I don't think X is related at all, though I've not actually finished it. I got bored and dropped it for a while and when I came back I got stuck on the last battle so there may be some connection there too, but I found the story pretty hard to follow in that one so I'm really not sure.

That sounds about right I think for where you are.

Thanks! I'll definitely look into it.
My main reason for getting the nintendo handhelds are the pokemon series , the new 3ds xl i must say can run almost all of the older pokemon games as well . i was extremely disappointed with the harvest moon games on the 3ds

Xeno 2 is a little wonder!
The design is great and gives a lively side to Xeno that I particularly like, all reinforced by the cinematics that dot the adventure and that can really go down in history.
