Wishbone: That's from the book, by the way. Where is your version from?
Oh, you got the reference, that was the point :P

It was the first hit on a Google search that looked remotely accurate. My books are in a box under other boxes.

Ah, thanks. Given the audio descriptions in that version, my guess is that it's from the original BBC radio drama, of which I've only heard the first half, more or less, more than 20 years ago. That would make it more original that the version I know. Please accept my humble apologies ;-)

Eh, there's nothing saying we're not both right.

The answer to any meteor threat has been under our noses this whole time!

Ooooooh, I just understood the meaning of the topic's title... First I read "The new thread to EARTH", I was confused...
I wish somebody would film the Larry Niven/Jerry Pournelle novel "Lucifer's Hammer" . If they stuck to the book,it would be the ultimate Meteor/Comet hit the earth movie.
Just to be on the safe side.

I hope it's not true. But I found many articles on the web on this topic. It's a miracle that for so many years Earth still exists. I have read on http://solarstory.net/asteroids/ that currently there is only one known asteroid belt in our solar system. And from time to time some asteroids come close to Earth. I hope this time these ones will bypass us.

Indeed. That's what I was hoping movies like Armageddon or Deep Impact would be. Alas... no.

Lucifer's Hammer would make a great mini-series I think. Maybe 4 to 6 two-hour episodes. It's a big book.

Then, maybe they could do Footfall. Or The Mote in God's Eye.

Oh boy, I've gone down the rabbit hole.
Let's just wrap Earth in a giant tinfoil helmet and call it good.

Or something like this: http://www.kloonigames.com/blog/games/pluto

Yes, please.

Nicole28: I was thinking, maybe before a real threat could materialize, we'd already have future gravity-mounted orbital lasers to decimate the asteroids to smithereens. But, I'd rather we work on terra-forming more planets. Perhaps, with greater space, I could own one of those futuristic house-thingy's with a bio-dome.

mechmouse: Blowing up an asteroid is a really bad idea.

You could use high energy lasers to heat one side of an asteroid, using the resultant thrust to redirect it away from earth.

Or use a chain of nukes in a series of explosions to push the asteroid onto a less extinction inducing route.

Another idea is to use thrusters mounted on much smaller asteroids and keep a bunch in earth orbit. Once a nasty block of ice is spotted heading earth ward, sling shot one off around the moon to intercept.
What superstitious nonsense! I'll stick with my healing crystals and Ouija board thank you.
