The HUB page for the Winter Sale now shows Roboquest thumbnail as the new release for today, so yeah, that was it.
The expansion for Kingdoms of Amalur released today so I'm happy with that.

tfishell: Or what exactly?

Ancient-Red-Dragon: I think the OP was hoping for games of substantially high quality & depth and that were made by more than just a few people working with a tiny budget.
What would you consider the latest released (on GOG) example of this? The Shadow Tactics expansion?

rjbuffchix: I don't think it makes sense to have the Winter Sale calendar have specific spots to advertise new releases, if they are not going to be bigger scale releases. Is it just me?
Perhaps GOG wants to spotlight indies and smaller devs/pubs in the hopes that this will increase the sales and keep them invested in GOG (and help avoid more "1% of sales" Supraland-esque and "2nd class citizen" cases). I think generally during these long sales we get regularly-scheduled releases, but I don't think we get big-name big-budget titles except at the very start, but I have no problem being proven wrong.

In any case we got various releases today.

I remember playing the original version of the base game and enjoying it a lot. The only thing that I missed at the time was a horse for faster traversal. But maybe that was on purpose, because combat was one of the selling points of the game, and with a horse, one would probably skip a lot of the encounters in the game.

Here's hoping that this expansion is good.

rjbuffchix: Not OP, but yes, and/or highly desired classic games (so Armadas are good for this even if they don't necessarily sway me). Provided said releases are actually DRM-free of course.

Sadly Roboquest was the release for today. Sigh....the hub updated with its thumbnail.

I think the OP and other users (me included) were expecting something along the lines of big-name big-budget like you mentioned in the bold section.

Looking at the majority of sales from these last 2 to 3 years we had (to name a few):

- BioShock: Infinite and XCOM 2 being released during the Winter Sale of 2019
- Prey and Metro: Exodus during the Summer Sale of 2020
- Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus during the Winter Sale of 2020
- Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition and Thief: Definitive Edition during the Summer Sale of 2021

Plus we had Mad Max and Tomb Raider GOTY during other sales not as big as the Winter and Summer ones.

None of these games are "new", but they're big ones that become DRM-FREE, and I believe everyone are always expecting those.

Like you said, they always got released during the start of the sales, but this time we got none, so people thought that the new releases scheduled for today would be of that "caliber", and not regular ones.

Anyway, there are new releases set for Dec 17, so maybe it'll happen on that day.

Couldn't agree more. Hopefully the 17th will show something.
I'm really hoping Onimusha: Warlords and Resident Evil 4: Ultimate HD Edition will get GOG releases one of these days.

I agree, that schedule gave yet another false hope of seeing some major releases. And with all due respect to Roboquest, which actually looks like a lot of fun, this isn't the title people were expecting.

Also, does this mean that until the end of the year we won't get any more releases other than December 17? Unfortunately, this looks like one of the weakest Winter Sales in a few years.

I agree, unless the 17th shows something of interest, GoG has been fairly weak this sale and that's quite disappointing.

Okay. Well, I just think people shouldn't get their hopes up about any "big deal" releases during the sale, but hopefully I'm wrong. I guess the Cave Story+ and Isaac are possible candidates unless they aren't consider "big deal" since they didn't have a major studio behind them.

I do hope you're wrong but I do have a sense of reality and don't get my hopes up too mucb about big releases. That said, a winter sale only happens once a year during a huge holiday that is big for business, you'd think that GoG would have something big as a surprise, even if it's just one thing. The constant 24/7 indie and anime releases aren't cutting it really, imo.

Don't get me wrong though, I support indie devs and I rarely like anime. If it's good. But GoG better bring in some heavy hitters if they want to stay relevant. Otherwise, they'll lose another 2 million dollars and more if they don't "get the goods" as they say. But that's just my opinion.

As far as the bots, wouldn't surprise me. As for the poohbears, not familiar with them, and I agree, not sure why this thread

I imagine they'll probably be able to keep scraping by for the near future. I don't think GOG have ever done tremendously well financially since the DRM-free crowd is a niche audience and most people are happy with Steam, but they've been able to stay in business.

To me, getting "heavy hitters" feels generally out of GOG's hands, unfortunately, since there's not much money to be made here and I don't think there's much they can do to change that, (imo) even if they really renewed their commitment to DRM-free. (And I suspect the Cyberpunk2077 fiasco hurt GOG's relationship with publishers in some way) But we sometimes get "lucky" - perhaps Square Enix's Marvel's Avengers financial fiasco caused them to be willing to give us some "scraps" here to bring in a little extra cash for them. (strange because I doubt these leftovers made much money, so maybe that wasn't the real reason) And I do think the remaining two major Tomb Raider games will show up!
I think GOG needs to be more aggressive, but expecting Steam-levels of success is very unrealistic. There is more that can be done, of course. I think GOG should cut their royalties from 30% to 20%. Not as low as the Epic Game store, but enough to look more appealing to publishers who might be more inclined to produce DRM-free versions of their games. As it stands, there is nothing really "in it" for these corporations to release games on GOG. It's more niche than Steam, that much is a fact. Companies aren't happy with 'some' sales, they want all the money.

But by making their royalty cut a little lower, I think GOG can get some more heavy hitters on the platform. Also, I think GOG's parent company, CD Projekt, should start making their games exclusive to GOG like Valve did in Steam's early days. The only way to get the latest game at the time, Half-Life 2, was to get it from Steam. I think CD Projekt Red needed to do just this with Cyberpunk, but unfortunately their shortsighted greed and push to release the game before it was ready hurt their reputation and image. It will take years to recover from this, and I think they know it.

GOG could be so much bigger than it is, while respecting the rights of it's users to own their games.
