Hi there, I bought 3 games from GOG 2 years back. Duke Nukem 3d, Phantasmagoria, and Phantasmagoria 2. DN3D and Phantasmagoria work perfectly! But I have never ever been able to get Phantasmagoria 2 : a Puzzle of Flesh to run! I have redownloaded all of the files again today and I keep getting this message when I click on the box after dowload is complete - - - "No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format "undf". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this."

Does anyone know what I can do? Any help would be much appreciated! :)

The other 2 games I bought instantly had shortcut icons once they were finished downloading and everything. This one has been a problem since day one.

"...when you click on the box..."

What box? And what exactly is it that you have downloaded? And how? And why are you trying to open it in VLC player?

I know. I'm so confused. I always click and download the files for this game. Once it appears that they are done when I click for them to "run" or "execute" that's the message I get. Phantasmagoria 2 a Puzzle of Flesh.

I click and download each of those....then when they are done and I click in the box for those I get that message. I don't understand where VLC comes into the picture either.

Okay, back up.

1. How do you download the game? Using the GOG downloader or through the browser?

2. What files do you end up with once you think you have downloaded the game?

You need to run the one that I highlighted. The other 2 need to be in the same folder, though.

It sounds as if you're trying to open the larger ones (which are named something.bin - which you won't see if you have filename extensions hidden as is very common), and that you have - at some point - managed to associate bin files with VLC (a stupid thing to do, as far as I'm concerned, but quite understandable at the same time as pirated movies often comes as bin/cue files, in those cases used for exact copies of DVD or Blu-Ray discs, and movie piracy is a lot more common than proper file management skills these days).

First, try to double-click the first of those files (the 1 MB one, named something.exe - again, you might not see that) and see if that runs the installer. That one in turn grabs the data from the other ones and you don't need to do anything with them (they just need to be in the same folder as the first one).

I just have VLC to take screengrabs of DVD's. I don't pirate anything lol. I just don't know much about some of this stuff. The other 2 games were so easy to get running and this one has been a major hassle. I'm working on it right now though and following some of your guys tips. Thanks everyone. I will post again if I can finally get it to work.

I have it downloading in the GOG.COM DOWNLOADER now, so I am hoping that works. The files were scattered and I couldn't find the location for the ones already dowloaded. So I'm giving it a go this way. Hope it works out.

It annoys me to no end that Microsoft has set "Hide extensions for known file types" to be on by default in Windows. Every time I need to work on a new PC/Server, the first thing I do is to go and switch that damned function off.

I also show hidden/system files while i'm at it.

Curiously i just found a recent thing on how to set the templates so the stupid autorun won't appear so my ramdrives won't start acting odd. Try to open ramdrive and (can't find executable for media!)...

Gotta make a combined template, registry, and configurations for base systems some time...

It wasn't an accusation. He was explaining why VLC associated itself with .bin files. Which it will do if you select all unused or possibly by default? Haven't done a fresh installation in a while. IIRC, you can unassociate it from VLC preferences.

hmm, GOG really should change the file ending from *.bin to something like *.GOGInstallData
we are not limited to 8.3 filenames anymore ;)

and a little hint on the download page that only the first file has to be executed.

and somebody should tell VLC that registering .bin as video format is really annoying.
Finally got the game to run by using the GOG downloader! :) Thanks.
Little off-topic:

That hiding of filename extensions (in this case e.g. .exe and .bin) is one of those stupid Microsoft things that apparently are supposed to make newbie's life easier, but in reality it makes it harder, like this case shows. I think this thing has been with us ever since Windows XP at least, and still it is causing problems...

Other similar silly things:

- How the Windows drag&drop makes assumptions on what you want to do. Oh how many times I've accidentally moved some file or folder inside another folder, just because I tried to double-click on a file/folder, and the mouse moved at the same time...

- Making window borders etc. semi-transparent (some kind of Aero-thing? Maybe this isn't there anymore in Windows 8.). It just makes the desktop and borders unclearer to me, and harder to sometimes spot where the window bar buttons are etc. There is an option to remove those special Aero effects completely in Windows 7, but then I recall someone here saying that if you do that, then you lose 2D acceleration (more CPU power needed?), ie. effectively making your desktop slower.

The newest Linux Mint 17.1 XFCE had a bit similar stupid default setting, how terminal window background is semi-transparent by default. I don't know if someone really finds that useful (you need to read or see something behind the terminal window full of text?), but to me it felt like a silly gimmick that makes reading the text harder. Fortunately it was easy to switch off from terminal window settings.

- Offering less and less information to the end user (hiding file extensions is part of that), like during file operations or when updating something etc... It seems whenever a new Windows version comes out, something has been hidden again, like where there used to be some percentage bar and estimated remaining time, now there is only a spinning wheel or bar or something, which just tells something is going on but not how much longer, or how far are we already. Do they think users get confused for "too much" data, and each generation of users is dumber and more confused than the earlier one? I'm not against making computers and OSes easier to use, but hiding data from the user does not make it easier. At best, it only makes the vendor's life easier because people can't complain about (minor) errors they don't see, for example.

Again, some Linux distributions are not quite free of that either. Like how Linux Mint just shows some generic big icon on the screen, when it is booting Linux. Why is it trying to hide the boot log from me, is there something wrong with seeing the text output while Linux is booting? Then again, maybe there was some simple way (pressing a key on the keyboard) to make that boot log visible, I don't recall now... But I prefer changing the boot options so anyway that that is the default view.
