Oh yeah, I loved that game! Honestly one of the scariest games I've ever played.

heartburnron: I heard machine for pigs fell short however even if the gameplay isn't great or not that scary, I'd be interested in it anyway if it's got some messed up shit in it...?
Personally I really hated Amnesia - it's a horror game with emphasis on terror. A Machine for Pigs however is very different (less confrontation, not much freedom, it's in fact more of a "walking simulator") - and that's exactly why many people who liked Amnesia can't stand it: For me it has been a real mindf***, full of philosophically very intriguing questions, it really touched some of the deepest aspects of humanity. A game that stays in my memory. So, if you are open to it: Yes, it has some pretty messed up ideas in this game, even if most of it lies in the realm of ambiguity and a lot of it depends on your guessing. It was a really unsettling experience for me. I've played it two times now and will certainly dive in a third time.

Thanks for that - sounds like I'd enjoy it too then. I certainly won't dismiss it.

Yes! I downloaded than when I got my first PC about 5 years ago and remember it being really scary but the problem was at the time I'd never played with a mouse and keyboard and couldn't fight the enemies. I did try and fire it up again about 18 months once I had mastered playing with mouse and kb but I was getting a steam error. I just tried clearing my download cache and tried again - it's now working - sweeeet!
Here are some of my recommendations:

Sanitarium ( psychological horror point-and-click adventure)
Stasis ( another horror point and click adventure game)
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream
Alan Wake ( if you can, get American Nightmare as well)
American McGee's Alice + its sequel, Alice: Madness Returns
Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Dead Space 1 & 2 ( you can skip the third part)
Silent Hill 2
Metro 2033 + Metro: Last Light
System Shock 2 ( don't know if you played this great game, so I'll add it here, just in case)

From your list I'd go with: Penumbra, Pathologic and Alone in the Dark 1,2,3 and the New Nightmare

Good luck.

Thanks Rievier. I keep meaning to back to Alan Wake - I was really enjoying it's atmostphere and story when I played it a couple of years ago but I never quite got to grips with the combat and ending up quitting in frustration. Any tips on the combat? I do have a lot more gaming and horror games under my belt since then so I'd probably be ok now...

System Shock 2 - another one I played for around 10 hour but gave up in frustration after having to reload on average of 20 times every time there was a significant amount of combat or even encountering those damned turrets!
That game is insanely hard!! Again - I said to myself I would start again, lowering the difficulty level and doing a bit of research in to what I should be leveling up but havent as of yet...

Completed and loved both Metro Games - so much so that I went out and got the book the games are based on.

Dead Space 1 & 2 are both excellent - played 2 first a couple of year ago and then just completed the first one a couple of months back.

Also have Alice: Madness returnd but gave up after being quite far through it - not sure why I didn't stick that one out.

Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth - played this for the first time also this year and love, love, loved it! BUT... that bloody bug on the ship with the cannon!! Even though I found a guide as to how line up each shot using the axis on the cannon, it was just impossible to get blasted thing to line up - it was so unresponive to my mouse movements. I tried every mouse sensitivity setting variation in the games options along with the 3 DPI settings on my mouse but I just couldn't manage it. Not helped of course by the fact you only have abount 5 seconds before you have to abandon it and go back to holding the rail to avoid the waves! I was gutted I couldn't go on and finish the game and still am! Does anyone know of a fix to get past it? I heard of you get a save file from someone who is past the part it can work?

I missed the Silent Hill games and would love to play them but i'm not prepared to spend over £40 to get one of them.

Never heard of the other ones so thanks for the recommendations.

I don't know if it'd help, but did you use this unofficial patch?

Thanks I did look at that before but I didn't actually try it after reading this:

This is an executable for patching the dark corners of the earth executable and script files. The blue light bug and extended cut scene feature works on all versions, adjustable Fov and more. New in 1.5 are: Options to unlock all difficulty levels and all cinematics after you next start a new game. Some new cheat codes. Only the original retail executable can be patched for most of the changes due to the Steam and D2D executables being protected.. unless you replace the executables with the retail version. (by Sucklead)

I'm still a relative nube when it comes to modding so if anyone thinks or knows of how this can be worked around I'd be really grateful...

Decided to go with Cry of Fear - one of the first PC games I downloaded but as I mentioned earlier, struggled with using the mouse and keyboard which was alien to me at the time. This is exactly what I've been looking for! So many genuine chills and scares in only the first hour of the game! This is going to be sweeet....

heartburnron: So I've alway been a huge fan or horror films but missed the boom in popularity of horror games due to my 15 year gap between gaming. You can imagine my dismay then, when I tried to play Outlast and Alien Isolation around 18 months ago, only to discover that was I utterly terrified playing these games to the point where I couldn't quite bring myself to get through them and ultimately gave up...

However, after repeatedly reading about how amazing Alien Isolation was I picked up the courage to go back to it after a break of 3 months. This time I did manage to complete that game and with my new found courage have started collecting lots of horror games. I been through a few now such as Fran Bow, Obscure and Amnesia: The Dark Desent, SOMA and just completed Outlast last night. The following is the list of horror games I have installed and ready to play but I honestly don't have a preference as to which one to play next. I'd welcome your input and recommendation as to which of these games you think is best so I can decide what order I might play them and which one start next:

Post Mortem
Overcast - Walden and the Werewolf
Doorways: Prelude
Doorways: The Underworld
Kholat
123 Slaughter Me Street 2
Apartment 666
Condemned: Criminal Origins
Amnesia: Machine for Pigs
Layers of Fear: Masterpiece Edition
Penumbra: Requiem
Penumbra: Black Plague
Penumbra: Overture
Obscure 2
DreadOut
Pathologic
Lucius
Alone in the Dark 1,2,3 and the New Nightmare.

I've never played any of these before by the way.
You NEED to play Undying... Otherwise you are missing out. One of the best horror games ever made.

1. These are the sites that offered great tips and helped a lot of people, who thought the same thing you do. [url=http://nogamenotalk.com/2013/05/26/guide-tips-on-surviving-alan-wakes-brutal-combat/]2 this is a video, but it doesn't spoil anything

2. Yeah, you should play System Shock 2 again on a lower difficulty, like normal or easy.

3. Give Alice another chance, you won't regret it.

4. doccarnby already posted the patch, so there's no need to do it again.
You just need to download it, extract it and then find the executable ( you can follow the instructions on the page you downloaded it if you don't know how to)

Agreed! Just completed it a 4-5 weeks back for the first time. Still thinking about it - amazing game - has aged really well.

I don't have either although I remember reading about a streaming service for PC that allowed you to play PS3 games, what was that? I wonder if you can pay that month on month and cancel whenever - that may be a cheaper solution to getting to play the silent hill games...
