Remember board games?

Going Cardboard, a board game documentary, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com!

We've brought you plenty of gaming documentaries already - but never quite this kind of gaming: Going Cardboard is a film about tabletop board games. Director Lorien Green follows the history of board gaming in the United States, and offers a unique perspective on the past, present, and future of the medium. We'll go behind the industry scenes and investigate the concept of "designer board games" through a series of interviews with the community, and board game designers themselves. Are board games on their way out? Certainly not!

If you've always wanted to learn more about the board gaming industry and culture, this might just be your ticket to ride: Going Cardboard is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com!
This should be an interesting watch. I love the old-school cardboard games but I have no clue about the new generation.
Will get it once on sale. :)

Erich_Zann: "Designer board games", as in the german school, Knizia & al. ?
Does the documentary touch on Avalon Hill and ameritrash as well ?
Yes, we have Alan Moon, who used to be with Avalon Hill, and several interviewees weigh in on the concept of, "Ameritrash". Also, there's a segment on Monopoly specifically. :)

Oh, and Knizia is in the film.

Hope you all enjoy!

Thanks for the answer !
Alan Moon isn't exactly what I'd call representative of Avalon Hill's output though...
Could be an interesting watch anyway. Will probably get this sooner or later.

Lorien, thanks for the info.

I'm very interested in watching this, but is there any plans to add subtitles to the movie? English is not my native language and sometimes it's hard to understand what people are saying.

If there's a subtitle file in english it would help a lot and I can translate it to portuguese for free to help out.
This. I would be interested in watching this one, too, but English subtitles is a must. Even IF I can understand what people are saying perfectly, having the content shown on screen for reference makes things much more "relaxing" to watch, demanding less focus on translation. Well, I guess my English isn't THAT perfect, yet, as I find myself a little tired after watching a hour+ of non-subtitled English movie...
Remember when playing multiplayer games. Meant that someone had to be in the room with you. ohh the memories.

What's the aspect ratio of the film? There was a question about it in the movie sub-forum.

So, that poor guy that was told by GOG that they wouldn't sell his movie because GOG wasn't accepting any new movies any more... Exactly how bad was his movie??

I'll talk to my digital distributor. The physical versions do have several sets of subtitles (German, Spanish, English, and Esperanto), I'll see what I can do for you!

I have a bonus clip where Alan Moon talks about his days at Avalon Hill, but the feature film itself doesn't go back that far for the most part (though there is a nice historical summary by Jay Tummelson).

Monopoly deserves to be mentioned only once in one sentence. Max. This game should be forgotten, it doesn't have place amongst modern board games.

I like your spirit! :)
As a lapsed AH gamer, I really enjoyed this movie. If you ever played Avalon Hill or Axis & Allies or Settlers of Catan, I imagine you'll enjoy this look at the gaming world, have your eyes opened to what a huge world it is (if you're not already fully aware), and also enjoy the digs at Monopoly.

Hi all,

I will make the English subtitle file available on the website, should be by this weekend. You are welcome to use it, or translate it, or whatever you like!

I'll post back to this thread when that is available.

Happy board gaming!
