I would like to move the install of WItcher 3 onto a new drive.

Is this possible? Or will I have to reinstall the game from scratch?

Thank you.

It would be probably be quicker to re-install the game. I assume you have kept the installers, the only other thing you need is your saves. Games tend to have dependancies and links that might be difficult to recreate. Why so against just reinstalling? It's a quick process - assuming you have the installer files which is the main reason to shop here, if you have to download it again, well you got problems either way.

Oh, and I think galaxy has a scan function, don't think it will help much, but you could try it. Installer is till the smallest and safest

Try renaming the game folder and running the game. If it works, feel free to move the game to another drive. If not, you will have to reinstall it. You should be fine if you're not using Galaxy, but in case you do, make it import the game from the new path.

Depends on how you have the game installed? If via Galaxy this will be quick and easy.

All you have to is COPY the game folder containing the game files to the new drive first. Then you can uninsall the game from Galaxy and use scan and import (found under the GOG COM logo in the top left) OR by going to the library -> Witcher 3 -> MORE -> manage installation -> import folder to point it to the game folder you just copied. Once that is done, Galaxy will verify / repair the game and it will be playable again (if it doesn't do it automatically just go to MORE -> manage installation -> verify / repair).

The is by far the quickest easiest way to do it without a re-download. If you don't use Galaxy and don't have the classic site installers then you will have to re-download the game.

And as far as you're saves, if using Galaxy they may be backed up into the cloud but you may also want to manually back them up to be on the safe side. These should be in your documents folder.

Just moving the game folder may also be good enough, but for best results using the scan and import function in Galaxy will repair any registry entries, etc.

Thank you all for your advices.

I will attempt what BKGaming said over the weekend.

Cheers.

introAether: ...
Easiest thing: move the game folder to another drive then create a link in the place it was.

Use mklink command for that.

Example:

- You have game in C:\Files\Witcher directory and want to move it to drive D: to Games directory.

- Move whole Witcher directory to Games directory then type

mklink /d "C:\Files\Witcher" "D:\Games\Witcher"

- This command will create fake Witcher "directory" in C:\Files and in reality when you enter it you will go to drive D:

- When Windows wants to run/load game data from this directory it will be also redirected to your drive D: :)

You can always use this method for any other data as well.

Ah I just reinstalled Windows onto my Samsung 250 GB 960 EVO M.2 Drive and lost all my games.
Not wanting to Download them all again I searched GOG.com for a fix, apparently its as simple as ,

GOG.COM SUPPORT CENTER GOG Galaxy General usability questions

How do I change where my games should be installed, and where I want to download files?
You can change those settings in the Galaxy settings panel.

To open the settings panel, click on the GOG.com icon in the top left corner of the Galaxy window, and select SETTINGS from the drop-down menu.
The folder settings can be found at the bottom part of the settings window.

Install games to - refers to the directory in which games will be installed.
Temporary game download folder - is the folder which game files are temporarily downloaded to before the game is installed.

Download backups & goodies to - points to the directory to which all game goodies and standalone installers are downloaded.

I know the threads old but I found this thread looking for a fix when an easy one existed but wasn't listed.

Just go to settings and show it where your games are and it will search and update and find all your games.

I did re install GOG Galaxy App as someone mentioned and got rid of hidden program data folder but i don't think I would of needed to at all .

Anyway hope this may help someone in the future . :)
Thanks for this thread.

I just tried to move some games and find this is the quickest:
* Move the game installation to the new place
* Uninstall it in GOG Galaxy, in the game's page under the button "MORE" (besides "PLAY"), "Manage installation", "Uninstall...". Leave the checkbox "Also remove my local savegames and user data" unchecked.
* Re-Import the game into Galaxy from the new location (asol under "Manage installation": "Import folder...")
* Just to be sure, do a "Verify / Repair..."

To de-install and re-install will force Galaxy to download the game again.

A link to the new storage place is not wanted as I wanted to remove the former directory.

If you have a dedicated partition, you could copy the games to the partition, then 'mount' it to a directory in Windows or Linux. Then you don't have to un-install and re-install afterwards...

I'm trying this right now with a different scenario as i've added a 4TB drive, and migrating my Downloads folder to the new drive.
Well that was interesting.

Moved all the old files to a different directory, wouldn't let me mount it on the old Downloads directory. Renamed the old directory making a new Downloads directory, and viola! Works!

This is actually what I do, mount it (on windows) in a directory.
You can actually mount the same partition on multiple places and fool yourself, when you delete the files from one of these mount-points because you think you have them twice...

Hmmm... you could if you need it i suppose.

I'd much prefer Linux's linking (hard and soft) letting you mount and point to other locations.
One thing that worked for me was:
1. Close GOG Galaxy
2. Locate the folder where you want the game to sit
3. Move the game out of that folder somewhere else if it's in there
4. Open Galaxy and the game should not be installed
5. Start game installation and download into the folder you want the game to be installed in but pause after 2-3%
6. Close Galaxy
7. Move the game into the folder that Galaxy was downloading into
8. Open Galaxy and it should validate your game and say it's 100% downloaded

Note this worked for Cyberpunk 2077

This also worked for me. I didn't need to close GOG galaxy at first, and when you see the game install and pause, it soon rapidly increased up to 100% after that.
This is how I did it:

Moved the folder FROM C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy
TO E:\GOG Galaxy

Ran "Scan folders for GOG Games": - See screenshot
Control icon / Add games & friends / Scan Folders for GOG Games.

Then updated the 'Game installation folder' in settings to E:\GOG Galaxy

I only have 3 old games installed - but it worked for those 3 :)
